Glasgow Warriors unveil bespoke Lions portraits as 2025 tour approaches

17 Jun 2025

Glasgow Warriors have partnered with award-winning Glasgow-based portrait artist Gareth Reid to celebrate the selection of four Warriors on The British & Irish Lions tour to Australia.

The chosen players – Scott Cummings, Zander Fagerson, Huw Jones and Sione Tuipulotu – represent the joint second-highest contribution by any club to this year’s Lions squad and set a new Glasgow Warriors record for Lions selections in a single tour.

To honour this remarkable achievement, Glasgow Warriors collaborated with acclaimed local artist Gareth Reid to produce four original portraits. Created and unveiled in some of the city’s most iconic venues, the project reflects Glasgow’s breadth of talent across sport and the arts, and the shared pride in its people’s achievements on the world stage.

Reid met with the players shortly after the squad announcement at the Burrell Collection, where he gathered initial sketches and photographs. Working under a tight 20-day deadline, he completed four distinctive works in his signature charcoal style.

The finished pieces were unveiled at a prestigious event hosted at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, led by former British & Irish Lion and Glasgow Warriors legend, Tommy Seymour.

Reid is no stranger to high-profile subjects—his portraits include King Charles III, Graham Norton and Dame Judi Dench, and his work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, The Royal Collection and the National Portrait Gallery.

Prints of each portrait will be sold by Glasgow Warriors HERE, with all profits donated to the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

Speaking following the unveiling, Reid told glasgowwarriors.org: “I was already a big rugby fan anyway so to mark this occasion for the four players is really exciting.

“It’s such a huge moment in any British or Irish players career that it’s just lovely to be part of that. It’s very exciting to commemorate that with portraiture.

“It’s been a really interesting project, I’ve been interested in the Lions for so long and they were all very good sitters, great subjects and all very different too which is great.”

Glasgow Warriors Managing Director, Al Kellock, said: “Having four of our players selected for the upcoming British & Irish Lions tour is an incredible achievement, not only for the players themselves but also for this club and this city.

“To be able to celebrate this piece of club history in a Glasgow venue as iconic as Kelvingrove Art Gallery is testament to the journey this club has been on in recent years, and allows us to celebrate the hard work that has gone in to reach this stage.

“The portraits are of the highest quality, and to be able to continue our support of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity – a charity that is close to the heart of everyone involved with Glasgow Warriors – is something of which I’m extremely proud.

“I’d like to thank Gareth for his skill and artistry, as well as Glasgow City Council for their support, as well as our network of sponsors and partners for their continued support across this past season, and I’d like to wish our players the very best of luck ahead of the tour getting underway.”
