What’s up for grabs? | Awards 2023/24

Players from Glasgow Warriors’ women’s and men’s squads are in contention for 11 accolades at this year’s annual Awards Dinner, sponsored by The Malcolm Group, on Saturday 1 June.

The fan voted McCrea Financial Services Player of the Season tops the bill at Hilton Glasgow. It brings the curtain down on formalities, before the Back Green Band take the stage to perform into the night.

Zander Fagerson, George Horne, Tom Jordan, Johnny Matthews, Stafford McDowall, Josh McKay and Henco Venter are in contention for the player of the season award, which supporters can vote for here.

For the first time, there will be two Glasgow Warriors Women’s Awards. These will go to players from the squad that competed in the 2023/24 Celtic Challenge. These awards are the Players’ Player of the Season, in memory of Siobhan Cattigan, and the Coaches Player of the Season.

Season’s best

There are another eight awards up for grabs, seven awarded to the men’s squad and a community recognition award:

    • Mackenzie Construction Most Improved Player of the Season;
    • Defender Breakthrough Player of the Season;
    • The Famous Grouse Coaches Award;
    • The Malcolm Group Leadership Award;
    • Harper Macleod Test Player of the Season;
    • SP Energy Networks Community Hero of the Year, in memory of Jim Taylor;
    • Denholm Energy Services’ Players’ Player of the Season;
    • and the University of Strathclyde Try of the Season (voted for by guests and supporters on the night)

Upholding values

Glasgow Warriors Men’s Head Coach, Franco Smith, said: “As we prepare for our Annual Awards, we are delighted to be sitting top of the BKT United Rugby Championship. On the night, we will be rewarding thoroughly deserving individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the season. Equally, we must not let that detract from the collective effort that has given us a platform to go on and achieve some great things in season 2023/24.

“As a squad we are looking forward to getting together with the Warrior Nation and sponsors to thank them for their ongoing support, particularly as we prepare to compete in the league play-offs the following week.”

Glasgow Warriors Women’s Head Coach, Chris Laidlaw, said: “We’re hugely appreciative of the opportunity to join the awards this year. Bringing the squads together to celebrate the season past, and recognising the milestone of starting this women’s team is great.

“We’re privileged to be part of these celebrations. From the get-go, we have been welcomed into Glasgow Warriors and made to feel a part of the club. As a group of players and management we wanted to show our gratitude for that welcome by upholding the values Glasgow Warriors are known for.”

Supporting champions

Finally, McCrea Financial Services’ Head of Marketing, Ross McCrea, said: ‘It’s been brilliant watching the club get back to the entertaining front foot rugby we’d become accustomed to at Scotstoun, especially this year under Franco Smith.

“We’re extremely proud to have now partnered with the club for 17 years, including sponsoring the fan-voted McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month award and the McCrea Financial Services Player of the Season which will bring this year’s awards to a close.

“We look forward to our 18th year as club sponsor, hopefully supporting the URC champions!”
