Steven McNeish was nominated by a host of his friends and colleagues at the Viewfield outfit, who were keen to highlight the impact McNeish has made in his two years in the role – even if the man himself isn’t one to step into the spotlight.
His two-year tenure as the club’s minis convener has coincided with a 30% rise in minis membership, as well as over 100 new social members and the re-establishment of Lenzie’s Festival of Mini Rugby after a decade’s absence.
The club is now a well-known presence in local schools and communities, with McNeish continuing to provide guidance and support to the minis committee even after departing his role earlier this year.
“It was a really nice surprise to be nominated and selected,” said McNeish.
“Lenzie is a great community club with thriving sections from minis to seniors. You only need to look around Lenzie RFC to see how many great volunteers give up their time to keep the place moving and teams playing.
“The club has been around for over 125 years and has big ambitions for developing the club facilities to provide a community hub for rugby that offers sport and much more for all age groups well into the future.
“It’s an exciting time to be involved at Viewfield, and I’m proud to play a small part alongside such a committed group of people.”
As part of the award, McNeish will present the match ball at Friday’s clash with the 10bet Lions at Scotstoun, and will also be one of the nominees for the SP Energy Networks Community Hero award, in memory of Jim Taylor MBE, which will be presented at the club’s annual Awards Dinner later this season.
