Steyn extends deal with Glasgow Warriors

Glasgow Warriors club captain Kyle Steyn says he is excited to take the next step on the club’s journey, after the winger put pen to paper on a new contract extension with Franco Smith’s squad.

One of only two players in professional Scottish rugby history to lift a league title after leading the Warriors to 2023/24 BKT United Rugby Championship glory, the 30-year-old has gone from strength-to-strength since arriving at Scotstoun in February 2019.

The former Scotland 7s star has touched down for 28 tries in his 79 appearances in Glasgow colours to date, including three tries in two outings so far in 2024/25.

Named as captain by Smith ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, the winger led his squad to a first-ever European final in May 2023, leading the side out in the 2023 EPCR Challenge Cup Final against Toulon in Dublin.

Twelve months later, Steyn was to the fore in an historic play-off run, scoring in the BKT URC semi-final victory over Munster at Thomond Park before lifting the trophy at Loftus Versfeld after a 21-16 win over the Vodacom Bulls.

Scorer of 13 tries in 23 Tests for Scotland, Steyn became the first player in 25 years to score four tries in a single match for his country, crossing for four of Scotland’s scores in a 60-14 win over Tonga at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in October 2020.

He has since gone on to represent his country at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, once again scoring against Tonga to record his first try on rugby’s biggest stage.

“I’m massively excited to be staying at Scotstoun for another three years,” Steyn told glasgowwarriors.org.

“It’s a really exciting group to be a part of, and the quality of player we have here is right up there with the best squads around.

“I’ve loved my time here so far, every minute of it. My wife and daughter are really settled here, we’ve got a great set of friends in the city and the group of boys here make it a privilege to come to work every day.

“Playing for and captaining this club, that’s one of the biggest honours of my life. When I think about who’s worn the jersey, both in my time here and those before me, it’s a really special feeling. We’ve had our fair share of ups and downs, but that just makes you appreciate the journey we’re on even more.

“There are so many highlights from my time here so far – from making the final at Celtic Park in my first season here, to representing Scotland. The URC Final last year is the ultimate though, that was such an amazing moment. The fundraising for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, too – we’re so proud to be able to support them in everything we do and it’s such a great feeling.

“Everyone here recognises the quality of group we have, both here and with Scotland. I just want to be a part of that, contribute in every way I can, and take us as far forward as possible.”

Head Coach Smith added: “Kyle has developed into not only an invaluable leader for our group, but also into a winger who can be truly world-class in both Glasgow and Scotland colours.

“He continues to drive standards on and off the field, including being a major leader in our Fighting for our Families campaign and supporting Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

“We’re proud to retain a player of Kyle’s calibre and character – he is an exceptional leader who leads by example above all else, and is a huge asset to the club.”
