It is the final SP Energy Networks Community Spotlight of the 2025/26 Season and this month’s winner is Wendy McLean from GHA RFC.
Wendy co-ordinates the mini section at GHA, which is one of the largest in Scotland. She is responsible for 49 volunteer coaches and all the Primary aged children at the club.
For the last three years, Wendy has been coordinating the fixtures for over 200 children to ensure they all get lots of opportunities to play rugby throughout the season. Alongside this, she has helped to facilitate school outreach fixtures and sessions.
Her success in coordinating this, is shown through the fact that GHA Minis have played over 50 teams, competed in tournaments across the country and most importantly giving the players lots of opportunity to develop and play rugby.
“I was thrilled to be nominated SP Energy Networks Community Spotlight award” said Wendy, “With two sons who have played in the minis section, I wanted to give back using my strengths in organisation and spreadsheets rather than coaching spin passes!
“I coordinate fixtures for our ever-growing P1-P7 mini-rugby players, working with over 30 clubs across Scotland and abroad.
“While the logistics are key, the players and coaches would say the most important part of my job is ensuring there are enough pies and sausage rolls to go around after a match.
“This recognition is a tribute to all the volunteers – the bakers, servers and organisers – who work behind the scenes.
“You don’t need to be a coach to make a difference; it’s about creating a welcoming environment where the next generation can fall in love with the sport.”
Wendy was nominated by Ross Haggerty for her work with the Mini’s section.
“Wendy Maclean has been a crucial volunteer for GHA RFC,” said Ross, “Her organisation skills and dedication to the Mini group has been transformative.
“She has been the beating heart of the mini section ensuring thousands of kids get to play rugby every weekend. Our minis tournament has grown to now over 500 kids competing and that’s all due to Wendy!
“We are so lucky to a Volunteer like Wendy Maclean and we thank Glasgow Warriors and SP Energy for providing an opportunity to recognise her efforts.”
