Match Ball Delivery | Meet Murray

Murray will be joining us in the crowd at Scotstoun just three weeks shy of his 100th birthday, and whilst he now lives in Inverness, his roots in rugby in Glasgow and the west of Scotland are well-founded.

Having started out at West of Scotland RFC – the only ‘open’ club available to those without a school connection at the time – Murray then represented Kelvinside Academicals after enrolling at Kelvinside Primary School.

After attending Glenalmond College – a squad photo from 1943-44 can be seen below, with Murray second from the left of the middle row – he then joined Kelvinside West in 1947, a club created after Kelvinside was evacuated to Arran during the Second World War and formed of a mix of Kelvinside pupils and West of Scotland players.

He played until 1952 when he graduated as a doctor from the University of Glasgow, moving north following the conclusion of his studies.

The sporting connection in Murray’s family still runs deep to this day; grandson Calum represents London Scottish Lions having previously been captain of University of Strathclyde’s first XV, whilst grand-daughter Megan Keith – a 2024 Olympian in the 10,000m – will represent Scotland at Scotstoun in this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
