Matthews takes home OFX Top Try Scorer trophy
Johnny Matthews has official been crowned as the BKT United Rugby Championship’s sharpest finisher, after the hooker was presented with the 2023/24 OFX Top Try Scorer trophy at Scotstoun.
The Scotland international finished the 2023/24 regular season with 14 tries to his name, two clear of his nearest challengers after 18 rounds of matches.
Matthews finished the season in style with a brace of scores in the bonus-point win over Zebre Parma, with no Warrior in history having scored more tries in a season than the Liverpool-born hooker.
He is the first Glasgow Warrior to finish as the league’s leading try-scorer since 2009, when Thom Evans’ tally of nine saw him top the charts at the end of the 2008/09 campaign.
Club captain Kyle Steyn was on hand to present his team-mate with the trophy, as preparations continue for this weekend’s massive BKT URC semi-final clash with Munster at Thomond Park.
“It feels pretty good,” said Matthews.
“I’ve said it quite a lot in the past, but a lot of my tries come from the hard work the boys in the back – and a few backs! – do at the set piece, so I’ve got to give thanks to them too.
“It’s a great feeling to win the award, but you don’t play the game for the individual prizes. It’s testament to how hard we work as a squad to get the ball over the line, and long may it continue!”
