George Horne becomes Cancer Card ambassador

25 Jan 2024

Glasgow Warriors scrum-half, George Horne, has been named the first patron of Scottish charity, Cancer Card.

CEO of Cancer Card, Ian Pirrie said: “This partnership highlights the significance of sports personalities driving positive change within their communities and marks a key milestone for Cancer Card, a charity dedicated to providing crucial assistance to those affected by cancer.”

George Horne said: “In the UK, sadly one in two people will get some form of cancer during their lifetime. It’s a condition that many individuals and their families have to face.

“At Glasgow Warriors, we are committed to being a force for good for our supporters and our community and if I can help Cancer Card in the love, care and practical advice they give then I’ll be proud to do so.”

George has won 26 caps for Scotland and scored seven tries and two conversions, since he made his debut against the USA in 2018. At Glasgow Warriors he has scored 42 tries in 107 appearances.

Rugby fan, Hazel who lives with cancer and recently met George said: “The appointment of George as charity patron is a great partnership for the charity and I feel George’s fantastic reputation will help raise awareness of Cancer Card’s very important mission”.

Jen Hardy, Founder of Cancer Card, expresses enthusiasm on the appointment of George Horne as the charity’s inaugural patron, marking a significant step for the organisation. She notes, “We’re thrilled to welcome George Horne as our first charity patron. His dedication to fostering positive change perfectly aligns with our mission to improve the lives of those affected by cancer. Together, we look forward to achieving new milestones and extending our reach across Scotland and the UK.”

Cancer Card, a registered charity (SC051187), offers a comprehensive and personalised support system for people facing all types of cancer. Their online support hub serves as a one-stop-shop, initially covering Scotland and Northern Ireland, with plans for UK-wide expansion. They prioritise personalised support through an independent status, connecting users with tailored resources based on individual needs. Their support services directory links over 300 services, receiving positive feedback and witnessing continuous user growth. Services include help with money, benefits, transport, complementary therapies to free gifts and experiences.

Cancer Card’s notable achievement is the creation of the Comfort Box, inspired by Scotland’s Baby Box, serving as a symbol of care and support for individuals diagnosed with cancer, providing warmth, resilience, and encouragement through thoughtfully selected items.

The charity’s Service Support Officers offer one-on-one assistance, and the upcoming Digital Helpline, in partnership with Lloyds Banking Group, aims to provide inclusive digital support.

With a patient-centric approach and commitment to impartiality, Cancer Card stands out as a unique and impactful cancer support resource in the UK.
