Shortlist announced for McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month for January

3 Feb 2025

Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Franco Smith has nominated four of the club’s standout performers from the month of January for the first McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month of 2025, after seeing his side book their place in the knockout stages of the Investec Champions Cup.

A comprehensive victory over Racing 92 at Scotstoun in their opening match of the calendar year saw the Warriors book their passage into the last-16 with a game to spare, before falling to defeat at Harlequins in their final pool match.

Smith’s men then closed out the month with a hard-fought win over Connacht in the BKT United Rugby Championship, consolidating their position in the top-two of the standings.

Supporters can vote for their winner until 5pm on Friday 7 February on the club’s official Twitter channel.

The nominees are:

Henco Venter

South African back-rower Venter made an impactful return from injury during January, his experience and game intelligence showing throughout his performances.

Nowhere was that experience more on show than the win over Connacht, with Venter leading from the front in a youthful Glasgow matchday 23.

His line-break would set up Sebastian Cancelliere’s first try, as well as playing the full 80 minutes to help his side grind out the win.

Jack Mann

Venter’s fellow back-rower continued his impressive run of form since returning from a long-term injury, with Mann playing his part in both of Glasgow’s victories across January.

The Edinburgh-born number eight was to the forefront of the win over Racing 92, helping his side to earn a first-ever home knockout clash in Europe’s premier club competition.

No Warrior carried more often than Mann in the win over Connacht, with the back-rower earning a brace of turnovers for good measure.

Rory Sutherland

Loose-head prop Sutherland was another to continue a fine run of personal form in January, as he continues to make his mark in his first season as a Warrior.

The Scotland international started both of Glasgow’s Investec Champions Cup matches at the start of the new year, impressing with his work in the loose in addition to at the set-piece.

His form was rewarded with selection for the 2025 Guinness Six Nations, forming part of the Scotland squad that kicked off the tournament with victory over Italy on Saturday afternoon.

Josh McKay

One of the most consistent performers in the northern hemisphere, full-back McKay once again showed his quality throughout January’s performances.

No Warrior has made more metres than McKay’s 277 in European competition thus far in 2024/25, sitting just outside the top-five overall in the Investec Champions Cup.

The Kaiapoi RFC product was to the fore in victory over Connacht, too, taking his season tally of metres gained to 348 – once again more than any other Warrior.
