Weir extends Glasgow Warriors contract

Duncan Weir says he is proud to continue his journey with Glasgow Warriors, after the fly-half put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at Scotstoun until at least the summer of 2026.

A product of Cambuslang RFC, the 33-year-old is already assured of a place in the club’s record books, with the 2015 title-winner set to enter his fourth season since returning to the club from Worcester Warriors in the summer of 2021.

Only Dan Parks and Tommy Hayes have scored more points in Glasgow colours than Weir, the fly-half having recently crossed the 900-point mark with the long-range, last-minute penalty to secure a brace of bonus-points in defeat to the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria.

Weir’s next appearance for the club will also be a landmark for the Scotland international, having made 149 appearances for the Warriors since his professional debut back in April 2010.

His try against the Bulls – his second since returning to the club, and ninth overall for the Warriors – has been nominated for the BKT URC Try of the Season award, the fly-half capping off a flowing backs move with an instinctive finish to go under the posts at Loftus Versfeld.

Weir also holds the record for the number of most successful conversions in a match, kicking a perfect 10 out of 10 in a 70-10 victory over Zebre Parma at Scotstoun back in 2016.

“This club was my boyhood club, and it’s a privilege every time I’m asked to pull on the shirt,” Weir told glasgowwarriors.org.

“I’ve really enjoyed being a part of this group this season and being more involved in the matchday squads, and I want to keep driving this team forwards and towards the top of the standings. We want to keep pushing for silverware and I’m looking forward to trying to achieve that at Scotstoun.

“There’s maybe a few more eyes on you when you get to my age – everyone’s trying to see if you’re slowing down! That definitely gives me a bit of a chip in my shoulder that I use to try keep up with the young bucks! Being one of the older heads is a role I enjoy, though – I know I’ve got a lot of experience over my 14 years of professional rugby and I want to share that to help those around me develop.

“I want to keep developing personally, too – I still feel like I’ve got areas in which I can learn from everyone here, and if I can do that while helping to drive standards then I’m more than happy to do so.

“I’ve also got almost every t-shirt in the wardrobe from my career to date – from everything going well, to injury, to non-selection, to everything else! I’m more than willing to share that experience with anyone and be a sounding board for whatever they need, and I can’t wait to keep on contributing to push this club in the right direction.

“Approaching 150 games for Glasgow, too, is a big milestone, and if that comes my way then that’s a massive honour personally. Being from Glasgow and having this connection to this club, that milestone isn’t even something that crossed my mind as possible when I was growing up. I cherish every appearance and I’m proud to give whatever I can to this club.”

Head Coach Franco Smith added: ““Duncan has been an excellent servant to this club, and he acts as an outstanding mentor to our young players.

“We value the experience he brings to our environment, and we believe that it is important to pass this experience on to the next generation.

“He has an important role to play within our squad that Duncan understands, and it’s exciting to have him involved with our group, both as a player and as an influence on our younger players coming through.”
