“I’m back” | Van der Merwe sets sight on reclaiming record

Club legend DTH van der Merwe has sensationally marked the start of April by announcing that he will be coming out of retirement, with the Canadian flyer targeting an immediate return to action – and the top of the try-scoring charts – this Saturday night.

The news – broken in the early hours of this morning by Canadian rugby journalist Lia Porlof – will see the winger return to Scotstoun on a one-year deal, which kicks in with immediate effect.

Having seen George Horne overtake him at the top of the try-scoring charts last weekend, van der Merwe will be looking to add to his own personal haul of 54 tries, as he prepares to pull on a Glasgow Warriors jersey for the first time since 2020.

Speaking from his home in Canada, van der Merwe said: “Watching George score on Saturday night just brought up so many emotions.

“Mostly jealousy, though. A lot of jealousy.

“I just realised that I can’t let anyone else have my record, and that’s why I’ve decided to come out of retirement and make myself available for selection for this weekend.

“I feel good, I feel ready, and being at the Munster match made me realise how much I love hearing the Warrior Nation cheer me on.

“I’ve been getting myself up to speed with the plays and practicing my dives into the corner, so watch out George – I’m coming for you.”
