Glasgow Warriors have been handed a further boost ahead of the club’s inaugural home European quarter-final this weekend, after George Horne agreed to terms on a contract extension with the Scotstoun side.

The news – announced at today’s Open Training Session at Scotstoun, brought to you by SP Energy Networks – sees the 27-year-old extend his association with the Warriors, having made his professional debut for the club back in November 2016.

Only DTH van der Merwe, Tommy Seymour and Niko Matawalu have scored more tries in Glasgow colours than the Howe of Fife product, Horne’s tally of 39 tries in 94 appearances to date also placing him in the upper echelons of the best strike rates in the club’s professional history.

His latest try came in Saturday’s record-breaking 73-33 victory over the Dragons at Scotstoun, finishing off a Kyle Steyn line-break with a trademark inside support line to cross in front of the West Stand.

Horne also leads the Warriors in points scored in the 2022/23 campaign to date, his 81 points in the BKT United Rugby Championship allied to 21 points in the vanquishing of the Dragons on Saturday evening.

A two-time winner of the McCrea Financial Services Player of the Season award, Horne has also won 20 caps for Scotland in his career thus far, making his debut against the USA in Houston back on the 2018 summer tour.

“I’m really happy to re-sign,” Horne told glasgowwarriors.org.

“We’ve got such a great group of boys, the coaching team is getting the best out of everyone, and there’s just a really good feeling around the club right now.

“I’ve been loving my rugby this year. A lot of what you see on the pitch just comes from hard work, really – Franco’s got us working hard, the boys are buying into it and he’s giving us the freedom to express ourselves and play.

“We’ve progressed so much this season, even from the start of the season up until now. We just want to get better and better every week, and if we do that then there’s no reason we can’t go on and challenge right at the very top.”

Head Coach Franco Smith added: “We’re very pleased to be able to secure George as a Glasgow Warrior for the next couple of seasons.

“His rugby intelligence is clear for all to see and he is a highly competitive athlete on the pitch.

“Moreover, he is someone for whom representing this club means a great deal and we know that he will give everything for the jersey. We look forward to continuing to work with him as this squad continues on its journey together.”
