Glasgow Warriors founding clubs to present 150th anniversary 1872 Cup match ball

23 Dec 2022

Glasgow Warriors will have an extra special match-ball delivery tonight in the opening leg of the 150th anniversary 1872 Cup match with Edinburgh at Scotstoun Stadium (kick-off 7.35pm).

Warrior #178, Alex Dunbar, will carry the ball out. Joining him are representatives from the three founding clubs – Glasgow Accies, West of Scotland, and University of Glasgow.

From the founding members the club’s senior teams’ club captains will take part in the match ball delivery. From West of Scotland, captains Emily Irving and Scott Cochrane will take part, as well as Kane Greggain (pictured top) from Glasgow Accies, and Andy Morr from University of Glasgow.

Emily Irving said: “Having supported Glasgow Warriors since I first picked up a rugby ball in 2012 this is a privilege I’m really looking forward to.

“As one of the oldest rugby clubs in Scotland West RFC has played a founding role in developing international rugby in Scotland. It means a great deal to be given the opportunity to display our partnership and support for Glasgow Warriors in this way.

“All my memories of the 1872 Cup are with my teammates from West. Every game has been amazing with a great bunch of friends and incredible atmosphere. Of course I’m looking forward to another Glasgow win!”

Scott Cochrane said: “I am really looking forward to this. I have never been involved anything like this so I’m excited to be a part of the occasion. A Glasgow versus Edinburgh rivalry with the amount of young talent on show by both sides gives all the ingredients for a fast, exciting game.”

Kane Greggain said: “It’s a huge honour for Glasgow Accies to be invited to the occasion. It is a real sentiment as a founding club to be recognised.

“My best memory of the 1872 Cup derbies is a Duncan Weir masterclass at Firhill. He ran the game well and slotted three penalties to win 17-12 at Firhill. That was after drawing 23-23 in Edinburgh in 2012.

“I’m looking forward to a physical, and open game of rugby being played tonight.”
