SP Energy Networks Championship Final | Preview

Two schools. Both from Ayrshire. Belmont Academy and Marr College go head-to-head in an Ayrshire derby. The goal? To lift the trophy as the SP Energy Networks Championship 2024 winner.

Since February, schools in Glasgow, the west, and Caledonia have been vying for a coveted position in the final of the Championship. Now, only two remain. After winning their pools in the semi-finals on Tuesday 16 April, Marr and Belmont will face each other in the final.

Neither school has reached this stage of the competition before. Both will be looking to scoop up the title of SP Energy Networks Championship Winner.

SP Energy Networks CEO Vicky Kelsall said:

“The SP Energy Networks Championship is something I am extremely proud of, having supported over 5,000 young people in our communities since it launched 7 years ago.

“Initiatives like this help to promote healthy and active lives, teamwork, leadership, positive mental health, and communication skills, whilst having fun. It is also a great opportunity for us as a business to showcase and highlight the synergies between sport and science through our STEM engagement.

A huge congratulations to the two schools participating in the final, both of which have never reached this stage in the competition before. It’s fantastic to see and I wish them both the very best in the final.”

Colin Sturgeon, Head of Rugby at Marr College, emphasised how excited his players have been at every stage of the competition.

“The SP Energy Networks Warrior Championship has been fantastic for our young pupils,” Colin said. “They have loved their trips to Scotstoun so far and are really looking forward to returning for the final. The opportunity to play against new schools in a different format has been enjoyable.

“The players have been working hard over the last few weeks to prepare for Belmont Academy in the final.

“It’s great to have two South Ayrshire Schools making it this far in the competition and highlights the great work going on in the area. We play regularly in our localised competitions so the players know each other well; it should make for a competitive final.”

Bill Murrie who is Head of Rugby at Belmont Academy said: “We’re looking forward to playing Marr at Scotstoun Stadium. Thanks to SP Energy Networks for making it possible.

“All the players are incredibly excited at this opportunity and hope to emulate their favourite Warriors on Wednesday and come away with a win.”
