Record-breaker Horne extends Glasgow Warriors contract

George Horne has capped a landmark weekend in Glasgow Warriors by putting pen to paper on a new contract with his boyhood club, in a deal that will see the scrum-half staying at Scotstoun for the foreseeable future.

An integral part of the BKT United Rugby Championship title-winning squad in 2023/24, the 29-year-old wrote his name further into the club’s history books on Saturday night, notching his 55th try in Glasgow Warriors colours to move ahead of DTH van der Merwe and become the club’s all-time leading try-scorer.

Having made his professional debut in November 2016, Horne has developed into one of the premier scrum-halves in the BKT URC, his trademark support lines becoming one of the most recognisable sights in Glasgow rugby.

The Howe of Fife product became a club centurion in the opening match of the 2023/24 campaign, marking the occasion with a try just 90 seconds after coming off the bench in a 43-25 victory over Leinster at Scotstoun.

He became the club’s all-time leading try-scorer in European competition in January 2025, following up a hat-trick against Sale Sharks with a try against Racing 92 to move into top spot.

After drawing level with van der Merwe by scoring against Munster last weekend – with the Canadian flyer in attendance -, Horne moved into sole possession of top spot in the all-time try-scorers list with his try against Emirates Lions on Plaster It Purple night at Scotstoun.

The scrum-half has also earned 36 caps for Scotland during his career to date, having made his international debut away to the USA on the 2018 summer tour.

Horne’s most recent international appearance came in victory over Wales at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in the Guinness Six Nations, and has scored 44 points for his country thus far.

“I’m massively proud to represent this club,” Horne told glasgowwarriors.org.

“I love coming in to training every day – we’ve got a great group of boys here, and everyone around the club makes it a great place to be. I can’t wait to be here for another couple of years.

“I’m incredibly proud to have reached the all-time try record, but we don’t play rugby for individual accolades – it’s all about the team, and getting that taste of success in Pretoria last year has given me and the rest of the guys a real hunger to go out and do it again.

“We’re all desperate to get that winning feeling back at Scotstoun again – we know how much hard work it took last season, but we have the players, management and backroom staff to achieve that.

“I want to thank the Warrior Nation too – rugby without the fans is nothing, and the supporters turn up in all weathers at Scotstoun and make themselves seen and heard. We’re so proud to represent them and the city of Glasgow, and we’re so thankful to have the chance to play for them. Thank you to everyone for their support and the messages over the last couple of days, I’m really thankful.”

Head Coach Franco Smith added: “George is a great example of what it means to be a Glasgow Warrior, and he helps to drive our standards on and off the field.

“His work ethic and determination to be the best version of himself is clear for all to see, with his passion to represent this club evident each time he pulls on the jersey.

“We’re proud of what he’s achieved in a Glasgow Warriors shirt so far, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with him.”
