Max Williamson says he is excited to take the next step on his journey with Glasgow Warriors, after the Scotland international pledged his future to the club by extending his contract with Franco Smith’s squad.

The 22-year-old – who made his return from injury off the bench in Friday night’s Investec Champions Cup quarter-final defeat to Leinster – has quickly become a mainstay in the engine room for both club and country, having enjoyed a barnstorming breakout campaign in the 2023/24 campaign.

Having made his debut in a 26-12 win over Benetton in front of a Scotstoun crowd that included his family cheering him on from the Main Stand, Williamson went on to make 19 appearances in his debut season as a professional, including coming off the bench in both the BKT URC quarter-final and semi-final during the title-winning campaign.

A further seven appearances have followed in 2024/25, including featuring in each of the club’s opening six matches of the season and playing a key role in victory over the DHL Stormers in Stellenbosch – the club’s first regular-season win in South Africa since the 2018/19 season.

Williamson’s form in a Glasgow jersey saw the second-rower selected in the Scotland squad for the 2024 Skyscanner Summer Tour, making his senior international debut by starting in the second-row to help Scotland to a 73-12 win over Canada in Ottawa.

He went on to feature in all four summer Tests, before making his first appearances at Scottish Gas Murrayfield by coming off the bench against both Fiji and South Africa last November.

“I’m extremely excited,” Williamson told glasgowwarriors.org.

“The last few months obviously haven’t been ideal after my injury, but it’s been an absolutely brilliant year and I’m so pleased to be back fit and playing again.

“Winning the league last season was an amazing experience for everyone – the entire playoff run was something I’ll never forget. Winning away to the Stormers this year, too, in Richie [Gray]’s last game for us, that was a really special moment.

“The group of second-rowers here has been massive for my development, too. The experience that JP [du Preez] and Scott [Cummings] bring has been invaluable and have been great mentors for me at the set-piece, and working with Alex [Samuel] and Jare [Oguntibeju] has helped us all drive each other forward this year.

“I don’t have any long-term goals, but I just want to keep improving week on week and putting myself in the best shape possible to get more game time.

“I’m really looking forward to the next couple of years – we’re building something special here and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Head Coach Smith added: “Max is a young player who we believe has the potential to be a key player for both Glasgow Warriors and Scotland for many years to come.

“His performances both last season and prior to his injury this season showcased his ability both at the set-piece and in the loose, and his skillset make him a real asset for our squad.

“He is extremely passionate about representing this club, and we look forward to seeing him continue to develop here at Scotstoun.”
