Sutherland commits to Glasgow Warriors

10 Dec 2025

Glasgow Warriors have secured the services of British & Irish Lions prop Rory Sutherland until at least the summer of 2028, after the experienced loose-head extended his stay with the Scotstoun outfit.

The 31-year-old, who joined the Warriors ahead of the 2024/25 season, has quickly become an integral part of Franco Smith’s squad. A powerful scrummager and dynamic ball-carrier, Sutherland’s blend of physicality, technique, and experience has strengthened the Glasgow front row and contributed significantly to the team’s progress in both the United Rugby Championship and the Investec Champions Cup.

Capped 46 times by Scotland to date, Sutherland featured prominently at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, having been part of the British & Irish Lions squad that toured South Africa two years earlier.

The prop was also a late call-up to this summer’s tour of Australia, coming off the bench against the First Nations & Pasifika XV to become a two-time British & Irish Lions tourist.

Since arriving at Scotstoun from French Top 14 side Oyonnax, Sutherland has made a strong impression with his leadership, consistency, and influence within the forward pack. His presence has provided valuable guidance to younger players and helped reinforce the standards and culture that underpin the Warriors’ approach under Franco Smith and his coaching team.

Sutherland’s re-signing adds further depth and experience to the front row, complementing a group that has developed into one of the most competitive units in the league.

His technical proficiency at the set piece, combined with his work rate around the park, ensures that Glasgow will continue to benefit from his influence through the next two campaigns.

“I’ve really enjoyed the season and a half I’ve had here so far,” Sutherland told glasgowwarriors.org.

“The boys and the coaches have made me feel really welcome, and I’m enjoying my rugby, so it was an easy decision to re-sign.

“The move to Glasgow has been great for my family, too. It’s given us a sense of stability, and it’s been so good to have them coming to games regularly. There’s a great family feel to the club.

“The quality we have in this group is so impressive. I knew a lot of the guys from Scotland camp prior to arriving in Glasgow, but the senior academy lads have also really stood up and impressed for the club. There’s an exciting future in store, for sure.

“It’s a massive couple of weeks for us. Toulouse coming to Scotstoun this weekend will be an incredible match, and then the derbies over the next couple of weeks with Edinburgh will be a huge occasion for everyone at the club. I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Head Coach Smith added: “We’re pleased to be able to secure Rory’s services for the foreseeable future, as we continue to build strength in depth across every position.

“He has fully bought into what we are building here ever since arriving at Scotstoun, bringing good energy and commitment to the jersey.

“He is also a strong role model for our young talents to learn from as they continue their own development, is a well-liked member of our squad, and we look forward to continuing to work with him.”
