Steyn ready to do Whatever It Takes

20 Jun 2024

Just 48 hours separate Glasgow Warriors and a shot at a first league title since 2015, and for club captain Kyle Steyn, it’s an opportunity that cannot come quickly enough.

Having booked their place in the Grand Final of the BKT United Rugby Championship in unforgettable fashion at Thomond Park last weekend, Saturday has been circled in the diaries of the Warrior Nation ever since – a feeling to which Steyn and his team-mates can fully related.

“The excitement levels in the squad are massive,” the skipper told glasgowwarriors.org.

“We’ve had a fairly focused week – we obviously had the travel at the start of the week, so the last couple of days have really been about trying to top the tanks up and fine-tune ahead of Saturday. We’re all buzzing and ready to go.”

Preparations for the trip to Loftus Versfeld and Saturday’s showdown with the Vodacom Bulls began almost as soon as the final whistle had sounded in Limerick, as Franco Smith’s men quickly plotted their route to Pretoria.

It’s a challenge that Steyn has fully embraced, with the club’s motto perfectly embodying the attitude of the Scotstoun outfit.

“When you get to this stage of the season and you’re presented with an opportunity like this one, that’s when the ‘whatever it takes’ mantra really comes into its own,” said Steyn.

“Everyone knew what the plan was as soon as the final whistle sounded at Thomond Park last weekend, and it’s been a brilliant shift from everyone involved to get us here.

“The journey everyone at this club – from players, to coaches, to backroom staff and the teams back in Scotland – over the last couple of years has been incredible, and you can feel the energy from everyone in camp.

“We’re confident in ourselves and we’re backing each other, and we’re ready for Saturday.”

Steyn also acknowledged the support coming from all quarters of the Warrior Nation, as supporters across Glasgow, the west of Scotland and beyond come together to unite in support of their team.

“We can’t thank everyone in the Warrior Nation enough, honestly,” said the captain.

“The support they have given us this season has been unbelievable – as it is every season – and they truly get behind us no matter where we play.

“We know there will be hundreds and thousands of supporters cheering us on from the fan zones and rugby clubs across Glasgow and Scotland this weekend, and we’re going to go out there and give everything on Saturday night.”
