Phimister looks to build on Premiership success in Celtic Challenge

Sky Phimister entered this season’s Celtic Challenge campaign in a buoyant mood after playing a pivotal role in Stirling County’s Arnold Clark Women’s Premiership title success, as Glasgow Warriors prepare for their first home match of the season at Scotstoun this weekend.

The winger crossed for no fewer than four tries in challenging conditions as Stirling secured the championship in December in front of a vocal home crowd at Bridgehaugh Park, a performance made even more special as it marked her first full 80 minutes back on the pitch following injury.

“It was really special as it was my first full 80 minutes back on the pitch after being injured,” Phimister said. “I returned to playing the week before but still managed to score one try in that match, so it definitely put me on a high heading into the Celtic Challenge season.”

The following weekend, Phimister’s attacking ability was on full display again, as the winger helped to secure Glasgow Warriors first ever away win against Brython Thunder, scoring two tries at Parc Y Scarlets.

That momentum is something the prolific try-scorer is keen to carry throughout the Warriors’ Celtic Challenge fixtures, where she is targeting further development in key areas of her game.

“I’m looking to develop more of my attacking kicks,” she explained. “I haven’t used them much in previous games, particularly on the wing, so I might look to get a cheeky grubber kick in. Defence is another big focus – I’d love to up my game in that respect.”

Phimister has already experienced the intensity of the competition this season, with recent action against Edinburgh once again underlining the rivalry between the two sides.

“The Edinburgh game is always a big fixture,” she said. “Their back-three are players who I’ve played with a lot, so it’s always exciting to go up against them. It’s always a difficult match and the biggest rivalry we’ve got. I’m already looking forward to playing them again later this season at Scotstoun.”

As an established player in the Glasgow Warriors side, Phimister says pulling on the club’s jersey continues to be a source of pride as the Celtic Challenge campaign gathers momentum.

“It means a lot,” she added. “I’ve been here three years now and it feels a bit like a family. It’s always a great time here and it really feels like a club. I used to say that Stirling County felt like home, and Glasgow Warriors feels like home when it comes to Celtic Challenge.”

With confidence high and clear ambitions for growth, Phimister will be one to watch as Glasgow Warriors continue their Celtic Challenge journey.
