The fly-half becomes the third academy graduate ahead of the 2026/27 season, joining Jack Oliver and Macenzzie Duncan in signing professional terms with Franco Smith’s squad.

A product of St Aloysius College – along with fellow academy talents Johnny Ventisei and Ollie McKenna – and West of Scotland RFC, the 20-year-old made his professional debut earlier this season, coming off the bench in a 31-22 victory over Munster at Scotstoun.

Urwin has previously represented Scotland U18 and Scotland U20 – winning the 2024 World Rugby U20 Trophy with the latter -, whilst he has also represented Emerging Scotland against both Italy XV and Tonga XV.

A student at the University of Strathclyde, Urwin also helped Scotland claim a first-ever gold medal in rugby sevens at the 2023 Youth Commonwealth Games, featuring in a squad that also contained club-mates Fergus Watson and Johnny Ventisei.

Prior to his debut, the fly-half was a prominent figure for Glasgow Warriors A, featuring against Benetton U23, Black Lion and Edinburgh A across the 2024/25 season.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” a smiling Urwin told glasgowwarriors.org following the news.

“Watching this club growing up and being a supporter for my entire life, it really means the world to me to sign a professional contract.

“Making my debut this season was a really cool experience and one I’ll never forget. To get the nod from the coaches and to have the opportunity to run on at Scotsotun was unbelievable and it was a real privilege to represent this club.

“I love coming in to training every day – pretty much our full back-line is in the international setup, so you can’t ask for much more in terms of an environment to learn! It’s amazing to be able to come in and see how these guys see the game, and all of the coaches are so good in helping all of us develop.

“I just want to keep working and keep putting my hand up for more opportunities. I want to keep getting better and give everything I can to this club.”

Head Coach Smith added: “Matthew’s dedication to his own development is impressive, and we believe that he will only continue to get better over the coming seasons.

“He has worked hard in training throughout his time here to date, and he earned his opportunity to make his debut against Munster.

“He is someone who knows what it means to be a Warrior and what this club means to its supporters, and we look forward to watching him continue to grow on and off the field.”
