Steyn: Semi-final at Murrayfield can inspire the next generation

With a place in the grand final on the line, which would also be hosted at the home of Scottish Rugby should the Warriors win, Steyn believes the occasion presents a unique opportunity not only for the Warriors, but for rugby in Scotland as a whole.

“We love Scotstoun.” The skipper told the BBC Scotland Rugby Podcast. “But we also really thrive on the opportunity for rugby in Glasgow to grow and to get more fans into a stadium.

“We’ve really loved the opportunity to be at Hampden the past couple of years for the 1872 Cup. Now we’ve got Murrayfield this weekend and really excited by that.”

The Warriors go into Saturday looking to make their fifth Grand Final and defend the URC title they won against their opponents this weekend in 2024, with Steyn eager to see a bumper crowd create a memorable atmosphere in the capital.

“We’re really hoping that we can do whatever we can to pump the ticket sales and hopefully get Glasgow, Edinburgh, Scottish rugby fans, everybody in there,” he said.

“Because having more of these big games in Scotland can only be a good thing for any aspiring Scotland, young Scottish kid that wants to play rugby, boy or girl.

“The more games of this kind of scale that we can get in the country, the better.”

Scotstoun has become renowned as one of the most intimidating venues in the URC, with the team unbeaten at home domestically this season and the Warriors faithful playing a major role in the club’s recent success. Steyn believes supporters now have the chance to take that atmosphere to an even bigger stage.

“You know, Scotstoun is one of the best atmospheres in our league, by a mile,” he said “And we’ve got the opportunity to grow that and do that in bigger numbers.

“It might seem like it’s across the road, along the M8, but it’s playoff rugby in Scotland.”

For the Scotland international, the significance of the occasion stretches beyond the result on the field. He hopes a packed Murrayfield can showcase the sport to the next generation of players and fans.

“I just come back to all kids out there that are playing club rugby now and want to play rugby one day,” said Steyn. “What an advert this could be for those kids and what this could mean.”

With knockout rugby, a title defence on the line and a place in the Grand Final at stake, the stage is set for a huge afternoon at Scottish Gas Murrayfield.
