Rennie: Work to do ahead of Scarlets
23 Nov 2018
The hosts ran in six tries, securing the bonus-point before half-time in what was at times a dominant display. However, Rennie believes there are still improvements to be made in the coming days.
“I was happy with the first-half, certainly,” said the Glasgow head coach.
“We were really clinical and defended really well for the most part. I’m not too happy with the second-half though. Defensively we were below the standards that we set for ourselves, and that put us under pressure. We scrambled pretty well, but we were lucky not to concede more points tonight.
“We’ve been really good on both sides of the ball over the last month, so it was a little reminder for us tonight. We’d have taken 40-15 before tonight, but it’s all about the quality of our performance.”
Rennie also paid tribute to Niko Matawalu on the night of his 100th appearance for the club, the winger marking the occasion by touching down for two of the club’s six tries.
“Obviously I liked his hairdo this week, that’s why he got to play,” quipped Rennie.
“I think Niko showed tonight how good he can be on both sides of the ball. He was a real handful with ball in hand tonight and I thought he was going to get that hat-trick, which would have been pretty special.”
Last season’s beaten finalists Scarlets are the next to visit Scotstoun, with the Welsh outfit the test for the Warriors next Saturday. With competition for places fierce, Rennie is expecting selection to be tough, yet it is a challenge he is relishing.
He said: “To win this competition, you’ve got to create depth, and the best way to do that is to give guys an opportunity to play.
“The expectation is that whoever plays next week will front up for us, and we’ve got full confidence in whatever team we put out to do that.”
