Rennie hails his side’s composure after Scarlets victory
1 Dec 2018
24 points from Brandon Thomson and a try from Nick Grigg ensured that the red card shown to Alex Allan would not prevent the Warriors from overcoming their Welsh opponents in front of a vocal Warrior Nation.
“We knew it was going to be tough before the start, so playing with 14 men was going to be doubly so,” said Rennie after the match.
“I thought it was a really positive response from the boys. We were really disciplined, our set piece was excellent and we looked after the ball. It was a very mature performance.
“We talked a lot about keeping possession, because if we had to chase them with the side they have, it would have been difficult.”
The result, along with a dominant overall performance, came despite several internationals being rested for the encounter, a fact which delighted Rennie.
“What tonight says is just how much we pride ourselves on development,” said the Glasgow Warriors head coach.
“The competition for places we have now is strong – it was a really good team performance, and what’s pleasing is that guys are fronting up no matter who we put out there.”
Glasgow now head back into Heineken Champions Cup action for the next fortnight, with Top14 side Lyon the opposition for the European double-header. Whilst a number of players may have increased the intensity of Rennie’s selection headache ahead of the trip to France next weekend, it’s a decision the Warriors head coach is relishing having to make.
“We knew that if we performed well we would be right in the running tonight,” said Rennie.
“Our scrum was fantastic – it allowed us to get into position and play in the right area of the field.
“It’s a good headache to have. The reason we left a few guys out tonight was to freshen them up, and I know they’re raring to get out there – there were a few of them having a bit of a run out earlier on.
