McKay on target with both try and celebration

Anyone keeping a keen eye on Josh McKay following his try on Saturday evening would have seen the full-back pull out a new celebration – one that resonates around the rugby community.
Firing an imaginary bow and arrow into the Scotstoun skyline, the man from Kaiapoi became the latest athlete to show his support for National Rugby League [NRL] star Jai Arrow, whose fight with Motor Neurone Disease has captured headlines around the world in 2026.
“There’s been a massive wave of support coming in for Jai from across the rugby community and all over the world, so I thought I’d do my bit as well,” McKay told glasgowwarriors.org.
“The NRL boys obviously know him personally, but you’ve seen the support shown by players and supporters from all corners of the globe.
“It’s massive. We’re all playing a collision sport, so being able to support each other no matter what is a huge thing. You grow up in New Zealand watching predominantly union, but there’s always a strong rugby league identity too. The NZ Warriors were doing pretty well this season, so I was probably a bit more tuned into the NRL than I normally would be!
“It’s a great watch though – the final over the weekend was a crazy game. To have seen that season unfold, both on the field and off the field with what they did for Jai, that was incredible to see.”
With players across the NRL having started the movement back in July, the bow and arrow celebration has since become a common sight on pitches around the world in both codes of the game.
“A few of the All Blacks lads were pulling the celebration out on their tour of South Africa, so I thought I’d do my bit and show a small token of support for Jai and the cause from all the way up in Glasgow.
“It’s obviously a cause that the Scottish rugby community can also identify and relate to as well, thanks to the amazing work that Doddie Weir, his family and the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation did following his diagnosis back in 2017.
“He was an inspiration to so many people, as is Jai, and we’re sending all our best from Scotstoun to Sydney for him.”
