“Glasgow Warriors has a rich history of boys flourishing during the Six Nations period” | Duncan Weir

Glasgow Warriors were back in United Rugby Championship action at home as they held Connacht to a 22-19 win on Sunday afternoon at Scotstoun.

Duncan Weir led out his team as captain for the first time and caught up with glasgowwarriors.org, to talk about the game and share his thoughts on what was a huge opportunity for many within the squad.

“I’m just really proud of the boys’ efforts!” Weir said, “For guys that maybe don’t get a lot of opportunities, to maybe go and front up, and win a really tight game against a quality opposition.

“It’s huge for the club and it’s huge for their morale. We will have some time off, and that time off will be a lovely big cheeser on our face which is always nice.”

Last week Glasgow Warriors suffered a defeat away to Harlequins, but Weir was keen that the squad had brought learnings into this weekend’s match.

“I think after last week, it was a hard loss.  We played well in certain areas of our game, but we missed some opportunities.   I think our endeavour to try and play good positive rugby was there.

“Even tonight, the conditions were horrible and cold, but we came into this game with the right mindset of playing the Glasgow way and we definitely did that in tonight’s game.”

The list of unavailable players was long this weekend with many being in the Scotland squad for the Six Nations.  Despite this, Weir remains positive about what this period means for Glasgow.

“Glasgow Warriors has a rich history of boys flourishing during the Six Nations period.  I remember when I was a young pup and trying to grab my chance at this time, and those boys have stepped up and they have delivered that. I’m delighted for them!

“I think that if you don’t get the result or the rub of the green, and you don’t feel that you contribute in a long season.  That game, if you had lost it would have been a hard one to swallow, but the fact that we got it over the line, is huge for the boys.”

As always, despite the weather, the Warrior Nation was out in force.

“Massive, first and foremost, I hope everyone is okay after Friday’s storm.  I know my garden fence took a battering and was lying on the ground by the evening.  But thank you for coming out, I know folks have weekend plans, but we really appreciate all the home support.  We love playing here as a team, so thank you!”
