Steyn praises squad as massive month begins with victory

Glasgow Warriors captain Kyle Steyn hailed his side’s resolve following Friday night’s bonus-point victory over Sale Sharks, a result that the skipper believes can kick-off a monumental month of rugby for the club.

Despite falling to a 14-0 deficit after half an hour of rugby, the Warriors rallied to earn a 26-21 victory over their hosts at the Corpacq Stadium, with Steyn one of Glasgow’s four try-scorers as they opened their Investec Champions Cup campaign with five hard-earned points.

“It was a massive performance from the boys,” Steyn told glasgowwarriors.org following the full-time whistle.

“With the pool and the fixtures we have, to come to a team like Sale in conditions like tonight and come away with five points is huge.

“I’m really proud of the boys and how we fought through the game, and it’s a great result for us.”

It was a result that paid testament to Glasgow’s belief in their own game-plan, never looking flustered despite the early concession of two tries to their hosts.

Steyn praised the diligence with which his side stuck to their task, in particular highlighting the impact to the Glasgow pack in a highly physical performance.

“For all of the hard work we did in that first half, we know we probably coughed up two pretty easy tries for them, and that’s obviously something we’ll review on Monday and look to fix ahead of next week,” he said.

“Again, though, we knew that would be the battle and we wanted to stay in the fight, and if we kept landing blows we’d eventually break through.

“Credit to our forwards, because I thought our pack properly fronted up and carried us through that first half, especially with the two tries just before the break.”

Europe’s most successful squad now await next weekend, as the Warriors welcome Stade Toulousain to a sold-out Scotstoun for what promises to be an electric atmosphere under the floodlights in Glasgow’s west end.

With the Warrior Nation having shown up in numbers in Manchester, it’s a support and a buzz that Steyn believes will serve his side well not only next weekend, but at Hampden Park in a fortnight’s time as the 1872 Cup looms into view.

“The Warrior Nation was incredible,” said Steyn.

“To hear our fans chanting for us all over the stadium was fantastic, and to see the flags down here away from home really gave the boys a lift and helped us push on and get the result.

“Josh McKay said it in the sheds at full-time – this is such an exciting time to be a Glasgow Warrior. These are the games that you want to be involved in.

“Getting the win tonight was huge for us as we go into a massive block of fixtures – we know Scotstoun will be buzzing for Toulouse next week, then its time to rip into Edinburgh at Hampden in a fortnight. We can’t wait.”
