It’s officially time. 1872 Cup time. Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh Rugby. The ultimate showdown and it’s all kicking off at Hampden Park.
After last year’s storming victory at Hampden, the Warriors return to the battleground with the aim to once more conquer Edinburgh.
The Warriors defeated the French giants Toulouse last weekend at Scotstoun in the Champions Cup, making their second round as successful as their first.
Edinburgh may have beaten Toulon at home, but they were unsuccessful away to Caste.
Despite these recent European feats, this weekend all attention is back on the United Rugby Championship and the silverware on offer.
Glasgow have been the owners of the 1872 Cup since reclaiming it in the 2022/23 Season.
Despite being unable to secure the win in the second leg the past two years, Glasgow have won on aggerate to maintain their status as the rightful holders.
In terms of form and players to watch, Adam Hastings, last week’s Player of the Match, has only missed one kick (13/14) in the URC so far, with George Horne on a full strike rate (5/5).
Zander Fagerson is back and on form after his injury spell over the summer. The prop brings his experience and power on the field, leading the charge up front.
For the visitors, an injury list almost as long as their team list, sees the squad pulling in players who haven’t been present in all their games so far. Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe are on the wing, up against the Scotland counterparts. The wingers will be no doubt looking for tries this year, having been very quiet in last year’s showdown at Hampden.
In the forwards, Euan Ashman is at hooker, and will be looking for slick lineout throws and rolling mauls to help his team over the line.
As the derby day looms, Hampden Park becomes the home of the Warriors once more. The Warrior Nation will become the Hampden Roar and Glasgow Warriors will be raring to go defend their title.
