Match Preview | RC Toulon (A)

It’s round two of the Investec Champions Cup and coming off the back of last week’s blazing home show, Glasgow Warriors are heading to the South of France to face up with old rivals RC Toulon.

Saturday night saw Scotstoun lit up via a Glasgow Warriors try-fest (mainly through a George Horne hat trick) as they took the bonus point victory over Sale Sharks.  George Horne was quick across the try line and saw him score a potential try of the season (or at least of the European season) within the first 15 minutes.  Kyle Rowe added a third and a bonus point try by Huw Jones all within the first 30 minutes.  George Horne then moved into second place in Glasgow’s try scoring record, by securing a hattrick before the end of the first half.  Scott Cummings crossed the whitewash in the second half to add his name onto the scoresheet with Glasgow finishing the match 38-19.

Toulon were also off to a blazing start with 10 point win over the DHL Stormers in South Africa.  Despite being four points down at half time, Toulon came out in the second half and managed to get the win.  The French outfit, were able to cross the try line twice in the second half and crucially, stop the Stormers scoring.  The game was littered with various cards for both teams, which will no doubt, be something Toulon will be keen to leave in South Africa.

Last time out

Last year in the Champions Cup, Toulon travelled to Scotstoun to face Glasgow on a very cold week in January.  Both were coming with points to prove following the Challenge Cup Final the year before in Dublin.  On home ground, Glasgow were the first to cross the line via Kyle Rowe just after 22 minutes before Huw Jones also crossed before the end of the half.  The second half of the game saw Toulon score first before Glasgow hit back hard and score three more to secure their home win despite the cold snap of weather.

Given how the two teams started their European games last weekend, it is fair to say both teams will be bringing that energy and drive into this weekend’s game.  Toulon will be keen to come out strong at home, especially after the first half of their game against the Stormers.  Glasgow do have the ability to win away (URC League win as a proving point) in intense and hostile environments will be something the team will need to draw on when facing up against Toulon this weekend.
