Cancelliere ready for European challenge

Sebastian Cancelliere is ready to hit the ground running in this weekend’s Investec Champions Cup opener, as Glasgow Warriors prepare to welcome Sale Sharks to Scotstoun under the Saturday night lights.

The Argentinian flyer was in the thick of the action last Friday night as Franco Smith’s side returned to action following the international break, helping the Warriors to a 17-15 win over a dogged Scarlets outfit in front of the Warrior Nation.

“It was great to be back at Scotstoun after so long since our last run-out at home,” Cancelliere told glasgowwarriors.org.

“There was a really good feeling around the stadium, and personally it was my first appearance at home this season, so I was especially pleased – I was buzzing for that.

“It was also great to get the win at home, especially with so many young boys in the matchday squad. I thought they were really impressive on Friday night and that puts us in a good place as we move forward.”

The focus now shifts to Europe’s premier club competition this weekend, as the Warriors open their 2024/25 Investec Champions Cup campaign by welcoming Sale Sharks to Glasgow’s west end.

It’s a challenge that Cancelliere and company are relishing, with the English outfit coming off a convincing win over fellow Premiership playoff contenders, Leicester Tigers, last weekend.

“It’s always really exciting to play in the Champions Cup,” said the winger.

“The standard in the competition is so high, with so many world-class players involved, and everything is at such an intense level. We want to get stuck into Europe this year and we’re excited to get up and running.

“Sale are a very physical team – their style is very similar to the South African teams we play in the BKT URC, so we need to be prepared for that. They have a big forward pack and some very fast wingers, and we know we need to be at our best this weekend.”

With only a handful of tickets still remaining for Saturday night’s clash, the stage is set for another memorable European night at the home of the Warriors – and Cancelliere knows full well the benefit that home advantage can provide.

“We know how special it is to play here at Scotstoun,” he said.

“It’s been a real fortress for us in the last few seasons, and we love to play in front of the Warrior Nation.

“We want to defend our home in every match that we play, and this weekend is no exception.”
