“I love being out here any chance I get whether it’s thirteen, wing or fullback”| Ollie Smith

Glasgow Warriors are back in United Rugby Championship action this weekend as they head to Treviso to face Benneton.

Ollie Smith, having been back in the mix at Warriors, following a length injury, caught up with glasgowwarriors.org to reflect on the last game against the Vodacom Bulls.

Coming off the pitch Smith said, ‘It’s obviously really tough. I think we didn’t really get beaten by a better team tonight. I think the first half we dealt with their attacks so well.

“They didn’t cause us too many problems and obviously only kicking three penalties in the first half.

“We are our own worst nightmare. Scrum is somewhere we can maybe improve, our breakdown as well massively needs to improve it and we don’t get that quick ball, we can’t attack off the right platforms.

So that killed us tonight in the second half, you know, when we moved the ball around like at the end of it just shows us how dangerous we can be. We didn’t do that enough though, so in the end it wasn’t enough.”

Despite a late come back from Glasgow with tries at the end, it wasn’t enough to catch the Bulls lead. Ollie Smith had a line break in the middle of the park that started up the late insurgence.

Speaking on what he is thinking when he makes the break Smith said, “I don’t really. I think my thought process when I’m running through is like, don’t make the wrong decision and then just make a decision.

“I think if we did have five more minutes we could have maybe done it but you know, it just shows how fit we are as a team that we can go all the way to the 80 minute mark and still score tries from anywhere.

“But you know, we can’t rely on that in big games like that we need to be at it from the offset. We can’t wait for the last five minutes to kick into gear in. We need to do that first half and at the turn of the half as well.  It was it was good to get a point in the end, but, you know, still not enough.”

Smith was back in the 15 jersey in this game, having spent some time covering the centre of the park since his return from injury.

“Yeah, I mean, there’s a lot going on. There’s a lot of a lot more alone time back there. It’s nice to be back there, you know, more space to run.

“I love running with the ball and hand and it’s a bit more freedom, so I enjoyed that tonight. I don’t mind being in the centres either. It’s a lot less running. I love being out here any chance I get whether it’s thirteen, wing or fullback.”

The Vodacom Bulls marked the last regular season home game for Glasgow as they now head into their final two URC games before playoff.  The Warriors have secured a home quarter final at least, but still need to gain points in their final games to secure the home advantage for longer.

Smith commented on playing at Scotstoun and the privilege and pressure that comes with that.

“It’s absolutely massive playing at Scotstoun.  We pride ourselves on winning here. It’s been a real fort for us over the past few years and we have lost a couple of regular season games here this season which is not like us.

“We owe it to the fans to be better, so when we come back for the quarter-final, we are going to try and give them the win.”
