Glasgow Warriors 42-0 Emirates Lions

On a night that saw the club raise over £20,000 in support of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, George Horne became the club’s all-time leading try-scorer by crossing for one of Glasgow’s six tries, a brace from Player of the Match Jamie Dobie and scores from Nathan McBeth, Adam Hastings and Grant Stewart rounding out the home side’s tally.

With Scotstoun awash with purple as the opening whistle sounded, the Warriors wasted no time setting about their business under the Saturday night lights. After the visitors struggled to tame the gales in Glasgow’s west end, the Warrior Nation was roaring their approval with just five minutes on the clock. Henco Venter and Stafford McDowall’s carries in midfield took the hosts to within a handful of metres, before McBeth continued his sparkling try-scoring form by barging over for his fourth try in as many matches. Hastings added the extras superbly, and the Warriors led 7-0.

Hastings was once again on top form from the tee 10 minutes later, converting from the opposite touchline as the Warriors crossed for their second score. Tom Jordan’s incision inside the Lions 22 was the catalyst, and as the visiting defence looked to scramble, Horne’s short ball found a diving Dobie for the home side’s second score.

Whilst Dobie would be denied by some last-ditch Lions defence on 24 minutes, there was no stopping the winger just 90 seconds later. Hastings’ short ball in midfield allowed the Highland product to step brilliantly past one, before accelerating clear of the cover defence from the 22 to dive over in front of the East Stand. Hastings made no mistake with his easiest conversion of the night to date, and the hosts had a 21-0 advantage.

Then came Horne’s moment of club history, arriving in suitably swashbuckling fashion. Swift hands from Hastings and Jordan sent Dobie clear, and when the winger was caught the ever-present figure of Horne was on his shoulder to collect the offload and race clear for try number 55 of his Glasgow Warriors career. The Warrior Nation was still saluting the score as Hastings added the extras via the upright, their side 28-0 to the good as the clock ticked past the half-hour mark.

Having been flawless with the boot in the opening stanza, Hastings then turned try-scorer himself with three minutes to go in the half. It came in trademark fashion, the fly-half’s dummy seeing him shimmy his way through the line, sidestepping Quan Horn to touch down for his first try since returning to the club last summer. Converting for good measure, there was still time for more before the interval as the Warriors jogged back to halfway.

The final flourish of a free-flowing first-half was applied by Stewart, as the Warriors hit their opponents for six to the delight of the Warrior Nation. With Horne denied by an illegal intervention from Nico Steen, the resulting five-metre penalty was quickly taken to feed the hooker, who showed superb leg drive to thunder his way over the whitewash. Hastings made it six from six with the last kick of the half, and the Warriors had a 42-0 half-time lead.

Now playing into the wind, the Warriors lost none of their attacking intent, a searing burst from Kyle Steyn almost sending Horne over for his second of the night just moments after the restart. Sebastian Cancelliere’s introduction off the bench also saw the winger make an immediate impact, bumping off JC Pretorius on his own 22 to raise a cheer from the Scotstoun faithful.

Cancelliere then almost caused the Warrior Nation to take the roof off of Scotstoun with 17 minutes remaining, the Argentinian combining to sublime effect with Steyn to release Horne. The final pass drifted forward in the wind, however, denying what would have been a try-of-the-season contender.

Still the Warriors came forward, defensive resolve matched with a will to crown Plaster It Purple night with one final flourish as the winds continued to wreak havoc across the field. Whilst the final flourish would elude them, the sound of the final whistle meant that a clean sheet and a bonus-point win – not to mention the news of over £20,000 raised on the night for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity – would send the Warrior Nation with a grin on their face.
