Warriors go green on Scotstoun match days

Glasgow Warriors will be continuing their campaign to increase the amount of waste which is recycled at Scotstoun, with the aim of eventually becoming a fully compostable and recyclable stadium on match days.

The club has been working closely with their catering partners to ensure that from Friday’s game against Cardiff Blues the majority of packaging available within the stadium will be fully compostable and recyclable and it will all be clearly marked to show where it should be deposited.

There is a new network of colour-coded bins around the stadium for supporters to utilise and play their part to help Glasgow Warriors enhance its green credentials.

Since the start of the season all drinks at Scotstoun have been served in compostable cups or pint tumblers in order to increase sustainability and so far from the games against Munster, Dragons, Zebre and Saracens more than 560kg of waste has been diverted from landfill, which equates to 50,400 pint cups.

The move also forms the latest step of the club’s ‘Always A Warrior’ campaign, which emphasises the importance of embracing the values of the club in and around the local community.

Supporters are encouraged to dispose of their waste in the appropriate bins when they come to games at Scotstoun and more information will be provided in the Match Day Ezines, across the club’s social channels and at the stadium on match days.

Glasgow Warriors managing director, Nathan Bombrys, said: “This is an exciting step forward for the club as we look to move towards a more sustainable future.

“One of the cornerstones of our club is to be a positive influence in our local community, and we encourage all of our supporters to make use of this new initiative when they get behind our team at Scotstoun.”

Dominic McKay, Scottish Rugby’s Chief Operating Officer, added: “This is a great initiative from Glasgow Warriors and is part of our overall strategy across Scottish Rugby to give our supporters every opportunity to do their bit for the environment.

“Across the business we are committed to reducing single use plastics and at BT Murrayfield we introduced recyclable cups at our bars during Scotland’s Autumn Test matches, an initiative, with the help of our supporters, which we estimate could allow us to remove upwards of 350,000 single use plastics during the 2018-19 season.”
