He said: “We’re massively disappointed. That was well under the accuracy and intensity we’ve been playing with over the last two or three months.

“We’re going to have a few days off now, so we’ll have plenty of time for some soul searching over Christmas and when we come back we’ll be better than we were tonight.

“I felt we weren’t quick enough to get into position and expose them in areas we thought we could. We’ve been really sharp recently and the feeling was if we got that part right, we’d put them under pressure. They’re a good defensive side so we’ll have to be more clinical next week.”

After conceding 13 points in the first half hour, the Warriors got themselves back into the game just before half-time thanks to a try from Pete Horne, but the Warriors were unable to put any points on the board in the second period and two Duhan van der Merwe tries saw Edinburgh claim the four points.

Rennie added: “I thought defensively we were good. We defended for long periods and did it well, but the disappointment was in attack. We knew they were going to kick a lot of ball to us and we knew they were going to defend up high.

“We got too flat and too lateral and tried to throw passes over the top that got picked off. The first Edinburgh try, if it’s a different pass we score but end up conceding seven up the other end. We created our own problems and struggled to get back in to it from there.”
