Rennie rues fine margins

Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Dave Rennie was left in a reflective mood following this afternoon’s 29-19 defeat to Edinburgh at BT Murrayfield, a result that sets up an 1872 Cup decider in the final round of the Guinness PRO14 regular season.

Darcy Graham’s late try ultimately saw the Warriors leave the home of Scottish rugby empty-handed, with a crowd of over 27,000 having witnessed a back-and-forth affair in which momentum swung from side to side.

“We didn’t exit well enough, and they profited from that a few times,” said Rennie.

“They found a couple of holes and got in behind us a few times.

“You’ve got to give them credit though, because they were a real threat with ball in hand tonight.”

Despite the Warriors scoring three tries of their own through Huw Jones, Scott Cummings and George Horne, Rennie believes that one key aspect of the match proved decisive.

“You’ve got to have an edge in these games, and they edged the contest at the breakdown,” said the Glasgow boss.

“We couldn’t get the speed of ball we got last weekend, which meant it was harder to put them under pressure.

“There were times where we managed to get on the front foot and get our noses in front, but again you’ve got to give credit to Edinburgh.”

Despite the defeat, however, Rennie is refusing to panic, with his side heading to Benetton in their first match of the New Year with sights still firmly set on a place in the Guinness PRO14 Final Series.

“Our destiny is still very much in our own hands,” said Rennie.

“We’ve got a number of games against the teams around us in our conference, so we’ll be looking to take advantage there.”
