Rennie pleased with crucial five points

Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Dave Rennie highlighted the importance of last night’s victory over Cardiff Blues in terms of his side’s spot in Conference A.

The Warriors kept up the heat on Munster with a thrilling bonus point victory over the Blues at Cardiff Arms Park and moved nine points clear of third placed Connacht in the process.

Glasgow welcome the Galway side to Scotstoun next Friday and Rennie stressed what a crucial period in the season the upcoming weeks will prove to be.

He said: “You can’t afford to look too far ahead, what happened in the last five minutes tonight proves that.

“Our next few games are really important, if we get it right next week we’re in a good spot and then we travel to Italy before hosting the Cheetahs.

“These are all teams in our conference so if we can pick up some points we’ll be in a good place.”

Glasgow’s victory was their fourth over the Welsh region this season but a late rally from the Blues made it a nervy finish for the Warriors.

Rennie said: “Every game we’ve played against Cardiff this season we’ve got off to a flier and they’ve stormed home in the second half, so it wasn’t unexpected.

“We’re frustrated because at times we tackled really poorly but I think for a big chunk of the game our attack was really good and so was theirs. It will have been a hell of a spectacle for the neutrals.

“We’re obviously missing a lot of guys through injury and international commitments but we’re really happy with how this group stood up.

“Each game against Cardiff has generally been an arm wrestle. We’re happy to get five points out of tonight, it’s a really important period for us.

“It’s a log jam behind us in the conference and a loss would have put us back in the pack and under pressure so it gives us a bit of breathing space and we have a big game against Connacht next week.”
