Match Preview | Cardiff

24 Mar 2022

Glasgow Warriors will be looking to continue their strong recent run of form in the United Rugby Championship this weekend, as Danny Wilson’s squad travels to Cardiff in Round 14 of the competition.

A confident 30-17 victory over Edinburgh at Scotstoun last time out propelled the Warriors to third in the overall standings, as the race for a home playoff berth heats up going into the business end of the season.

It will be a first visit to Cardiff Arms Park since February 2019 for Wilson’s men, with last season’s meeting between the two teams having been played at the Dragons’ home of Rodney Parade.

Whilst the home side may be lower in the standings, however, there will be no danger of the Warriors underestimating Dai Young’s squad when the whistle blows on Saturday evening.

Here’s how the fixture is shaping up:

Previous Encounter

A tense and scrappy affair ultimately went the way of the Warriors in November 2020, Wilson’s squad earning a narrow 19-10 victory over those in black and blue.

A late interception try from Huw Jones proved decisive for the visitors, Pete Horne and Brandon Thomson contributing 14 points between them in Newport.

Lee Jones claimed Player of the Match honours on a memorable night for the winger, after making his first appearance for the club in 22 months following recovery from long-term injury.

Ones to watch

One of the unsung heroes of Welsh rugby in recent seasons, Josh Navidi’s consistent excellence in the back-row has finally received well-earned recognition in recent years. A late call-up to the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour after being unlucky to miss out on initial selection, the 31-year-old’s versatility sees him able to cover all three back-row positions to an equally effective degree.

Uilisi Halaholo has become a firm fan favourite at the Arms Park since his arrival from the Hurricanes in 2016, with his blend of creativity and physicality making him a staple of the Cardiff midfield. Capped 10 times by Wales, the Super Rugby winner has 17 tries in his 90 outings for the region to date.

With a strike rate of a try every other game in Cardiff colours, the Glasgow defence will need to be on their toes to keep Owen Lane quiet on Saturday evening. A powerful strike runner to boot, the winger is a product of the famous Whitchurch High School, alma mater of Sam Warburton, Gareth Bale and Geraint Thomas.

Memorable moment

If Glasgow’s last trip to the Arms Park is anything to go by, supporters could be in for a treat on Saturday evening.

A ten-try thriller was ultimately edged by the Warriors, a Dave Rennie-helmed outfit earning a 38-34 victory despite an Aled Summerhill hat-trick for the hosts.

Tevita Tameilau scored the pick of Glasgow’s five tries, finishing off a typically abrasive break from George Turner by running in from 40 metres.

Match Officials

South African referee AJ Jacobs will be in charge for Saturday’s encounter, as he takes charge of his ninth match in the URC.

Ben Whitehouse and Simon Rees will be on the touchlines as his assistants, with David Rose serving as the Television Match Official.
