Forbes looking to continue momentum with Cardiff trip

Glasgow Warriors winger Cole Forbes underlined the need to continue to build upon last Friday’s well-earned 30-17 win over Edinburgh in round 14 of the United Rugby Championship, as the race for playoff positions heats up heading into the business end of the season.

A first visit to Cardiff Arms Park in three years awaits Danny Wilson’s squad this weekend, as the Warriors look to continue a run of form that has seen them defeated only once in their previous seven URC outings.

Having turned in a full 80-minute shift against their cross-country rivals at Scotstoun, Forbes and his team-mates are well aware of the need to hit the same standards once more when the whistle blows on Saturday evening.

“The boys were really up for the derby, and we were rewarded with the result,” the winger told glasgowwarriors.org.

“We were pleased with the way we performed and the points we got are so important in terms of the league standings.

“We know that we need to go to Cardiff this weekend and back it up now – we’ve got five or six games left, so it’s important to keep picking up points going into the business end of the season.”

Whilst Saturday’s hosts may currently sit down in 14th in the overall standings, Forbes was quick to highlight the threat posed by a talent-laden squad at the Cardiff Arms Park.

With former British and Irish Lions prop Dai Young back for a second spell at the helm, the winger is acutely aware of the test coming his side’s way this weekend.

“They’re a team that has jackal threats all across the park, so we know we’ll need to be at our best over the ball on Saturday,” said Forbes.

“If we can sharpen up our support lines and our clearout work at the ruck, then we’ll be in a good shape.

“We’ll be looking to put in another big performance and we’ll need to show up in defence, as we know Cardiff will be coming out looking for a big win of their own.”

Forbes was speaking after a skills-focused session in the March sunshine at Scotstoun, with spirits high after last weekend’s derby triumph.

It’s a vibe that will serve the Warriors well as they look to secure their spot in the knockout stages, according to the 22-year-old.

“When the sun comes out in Glasgow, it makes it that bit easier!” smiled Forbes.

“You come to work with a smile and ready to go out and play rugby with your mates.

“Morale is pretty high right now and it’s up to us to keep that going right through until the end of the season.”
