Defensive effort pleases Wilson

Tries in either half from Fraser Brown and Ratu Tagive saw the Warriors exact a measure of revenge on their opponents at BT Murrayfield, finishing the campaign with a first win under their new boss.

“We said before the game that the win was our main priority tonight,” said Wilson.

“Having lost a derby last weekend, we wanted to get the right result this week.

“I thought we were dominant in most aspects tonight, and we probably left a few points out there. We’ll have a look at that and work out what we need to do better, but I thought we solved the contact area problems we identified last week and did very well at the set-piece. We more than matched Edinburgh in that area.”

A resolute effort without the ball saw the Warriors become the first side to deny Edinburgh a try in the Guinness PRO14 this season, a fact that provided Wilson and his coaching team with the greatest satisfaction.

“The biggest thing for me was the defensive shift, without question,” said the Glasgow boss.

“That was an Edinburgh team packed with dangerous runners, and we denied them a try tonight. That’s an excellent platform to work on going into next season.

“Credit to Kenny Murray and the work the boys have put in, because that was an excellent defensive effort.”

Whilst a semi-final berth may have eluded the club, Wilson and the Warriors will not be sitting idle over the next few weeks. Indeed, the preparations start now for the 2020/21 campaign.

“We’ve got a number of players still to come back from injury, who missed out on the last two weeks,” explained Wilson.

“What we’ll look at now is going into next season – we wanted to give a few experienced players a bit more game time tonight, because that’ll be our last hit-out until we go into the first game of next season more than likely.

“Long-term, we’ll be looking at the depth of our squad, but tonight was a good marker to put down.”
