All in the preparation for stand-in winger Dobie

When Rufus McLean departed the field for a Head Injury Assessment with just five minutes on the clock, you’d have been forgiven for wondering what was going through the mind of Jamie Dobie as he jogged on to the pitch in his place.

After all, covering the outside backs is not exactly the usual habitat for a scrum-half – and especially not on a typically wintry Friday night in February against one of the United Rugby Championship’s heavyweights.

Yet as the 20-year-old explains, whilst he might have been out of position, he definitely wasn’t winging it.

“We’d actually prepared for that during the week, thankfully!” a smiling Dobie told glasgowwarriors.org following the final whistle.

“I knew that if one of our wingers went down, I’d probably be going on the wing, so we’d run a few scenarios like that in the run-up to the game. You never think it’s going to happen though, but you’ve got to be ready for anything that happens.

“I knew straight away when Rufus went down that’d be going on – it wasn’t exactly the night for wingers, but I’m happy to fill in!”

Roared on by the Warrior Nation who braved the elements in the stands at Scotstoun, a resolute rear-guard effort from those in black and blue ensured that Scott Cummings’ first-half try would be enough to see a crucial four points go the way of the home side.

It’s a result that had the Glasgow players and coaches grinning with satisfaction post-match, with Dobie no exception.

“I think in general we managed the game well, and managed the conditions well,” said the Scotland international.

“The weather really lent itself to a kicking and territory-based game, especially in the second half. They were pinning us deep in our half and we had to soak up a lot of pressure.

“To be able to see out that win though is such a good feeling – the boys really earned that one.”

The win moves the Warriors into a share of second in the table, level on points with Leinster albeit having played a game more than the defending champions.

With the visit of Benetton next Saturday forming the second part of a back-to-back home stand for Dobie and his team-mates, the onus is now on Glasgow to continue their momentum as they push on into the business end of the season.

“It’s a massive result,” said Dobie.

“Munster are one of the top teams in the league, so a win like that can really help to define your season. The crowd was fantastic and getting those four points was so important for us in the URC standings. It’s a good platform to build upon.

“We know next week is going to be another big game for us. Coming off a down week after the Connacht result, we’ve got some real momentum behind us now. It’s important to make the most of that when you can, and turning in another performance like that against Benetton is really important.

“We know that what they can do and it’s an important match in terms of our Shield as well as the overall standings, so we’ll be ready next Saturday night.”
