Heineken Champions Cup format confirmed for 2021/22

Heineken Champions Cup format confirmed for 2021/22

EPCR has confirmed the format for the 2021/22 Heineken Champions Cup, which will once again see 24 of Europe's best clubs compete for the northern hemisphere's premier club trophy.

Eight clubs apiece from the United Rugby Championship, English Premiership and Top14 have secured their places in the competition, with each club aiming for a place in the 2022 Heineken Champions Cup Final in Marseille on 28 May 2022.

The 24 teams will be divided into two pools of 12, with clubs ranked into four tiers; clubs in Tier One will play the Tier Four teams from the two leagues in which they do not compete on a home and away basis, and teams in Tier Two will do likewise with those in Tier Three.

The eight highest-ranked teams in each pool will progress to a round-of-16 stage played over two legs, before the quarter-finals and semi-finals determine who competes in the 2022 Final.

The draw for the 2021/22 Heineken Champions Cup will be made in the coming weeks, with full details to be communicated following confirmation from EPCR.

Who can Glasgow Warriors face?

As a Tier Four-ranked team from the URC, Glasgow Warriors will play one of the Tier One teams from the English Premiership and one of the Tier One teams from the Top14 on a home and away basis.

Therefore, Danny Wilson’s men will meet either Exeter or Harlequins, as well as either Toulouse or La Rochelle.
