Glasgow Warriors support Tonga relief effort

Glasgow Warriors and the Pacific Islands have always enjoyed a special relationship throughout the club’s professional history.

Having welcomed a host of Tongans, and players with Tongan heritage, to the Glasgow Warriors family over the years, everyone at the club is proud to support the ongoing relief effort following the underwater volcanic eruption that struck Tonga on January 14, 2022.

As a club, we have taken the time to first and foremost ensure that the welfare of our Tongan players past and present has been looked after, as well as that of their families in and around the affected region.

We are now asking the Warrior Nation to show the support that has made them such an invaluable part of this club, as we come together to help those affected and aid the ongoing relief effort across Tonga and the Pacific.

You can donate to the New Zealand Red Cross’ ongoing Pacific Tsunami Appeal by clicking here, with your donation going towards the provision of safe drinking water, shelter and first aid for those in affected regions.

You can also click here to donate to Youth In Union, who have partnered with the Tonga Rugby Union to provide aid to those in need across the islands of Tonga.

The five Tongans to have proudly represented Glasgow have sent messages of gratitude to the Glasgow Warriors family.

Dear Warrior Nation,

We greatly appreciate, as both current and former players at the Warriors, that the Glasgow Warriors cultural mantra, “Once a Warrior, always a Warrior…” has been exercised to reach out to us to try and gather support for our little nation of Tonga, following the current environmental disaster that occurred just recently.

We can honestly say it has been a nerve-wracking few days, not knowing the outcome caused by this natural disaster and the survival of family, friends and loved ones. We appreciate immensely your efforts, and love shown towards our fellow men and women of Tonga.

The photos that are being posted online from back home & what disaster the tsunami has left behind is devastating.

Some have been quite fortunate to walk away with minimal damage. However, this is not the case for most. Some islands and villages have been wiped out completely, leaving families to re-build from the ground up.

Together, we can make a difference to those in need.

Please keep Tonga in your prayers, following the tsunami.

To the Glasgow Warriors Family – we thank you for any donations to support our humble nation, but most of all thank you for thinking of us.

Thank you for thinking of Tonga

Malo aupito, ofa lahi atu.

Otua ofa atu!

(Thank you & love you very much, God bless)
