Glasgow Warriors offered voluntary fitness sessions
Glasgow Warriors players will be invited to have voluntary fitness sessions at BT Murrayfield from Monday 22 June, subject to the government moving to Phase 2 of lockdown on Thursday 18 June.
This marks the very first step towards returning to rugby for the Glasgow Warriors players and will be the first chance for activity since new Head Coach Danny Wilson began working with the club on Monday 1 June.
In recent weeks BT Murrayfield has been preparing to facilitate voluntary, individual fitness sessions for players. Gym stations and running space are being prepared following strict parameters to ensure players can arrive and train safely while maintaining two metres of social distance at all times.
The primary purpose of the sessions is to offer players an opportunity to progress general fitness after one of the longest spells of de-conditioning and playing inactivity in the professional era since the suspension of PRO14 in March. At present, the 2019/20 Guinness PRO14 season remains suspended.
Yesterday Mark Dodson, Scottish Rugby Chief Executive, gave a media briefing and outlined that players will remain on furlough, the Government’s job retention scheme, during this phase of voluntary training.
Welcoming the news Glasgow Warriors Head Coach, Danny Wilson, told glasgowwarriors.org: “It’s positive that if we are able to move to the next phase of the Government’s lockdown easing there is an opportunity for players to take part in voluntary conditioning sessions. We all can’t wait for rugby to return and this next step marks the start of that journey.
“It’s vital though that we progress carefully and our team, along with staff at Scottish Rugby, are doing everything we can to ensure this first step is a success.”
