Glasgow Warriors 2019/20 Awards | The winners

Glasgow Warriors honoured the standout performers of the season so far by taking the 2019/20 Awards online, sponsored by Malcolm Group.

McCrea Financial Services Player of the Season

George Horne has been voted as the Player of the Season from a shortlist of nominees selected by the Glasgow Warriors coaching staff, and the Warrior Nation selecting their winner in a week-long vote on the club’s official social media channels.

The 25-year-old claims the club’s most prestigious award for the second time in three seasons, having also lifted the trophy in 2017/18.

The scrum-half has been in electric form over the course of the season so far, making 13 appearances in all competitions and with his trademark support lines and speed around the park have seen him cross for seven tries in the 2019/20 Guinness PRO14.

Land Rover Young Player of the Season

He’s made an instant impact upon the Warrior Nation in his first season as a professional – a season that Jamie Dobie has now capped off by being named as the Land Rover Young Player of the Season.

Joining Glasgow Warriors straight from school, the 18-year-old from Inverness has taken to professional rugby like the proverbial duck to water and has made seven appearances to date this season.

The scrum-half’s landmark performance came on his first start for the club, with Dobie turning in a sublime display to claim the man-of-the-match award in February’s victory over the Dragons at Scotstoun.

The Famous Grouse Coaches Award

The club’s record holder for appearances was named as the 2019/20 recipient of The Famous Grouse Coaches Award, with Rob Harley being recognised for his impact on and off the pitch over the course of the season so far.

Outgoing Head Coach Dave Rennie praised Harley for his work ethic, leadership, intelligence and durability around the park, as well as highlighting the flanker’s work in leading the club’s charity committee.

The 30-year-old has played in all bar one of Glasgow’s matches this season, becoming only the second Warrior to reach 50 European appearances earlier this year.

Al Kellock Leadership Award, sponsored by Malcolm Group

Club co-captain Ryan Wilson received the 2019/20 Al Kellock Leadership Award, sponsored by Malcolm Group, after leading from the front across the campaign.

Since returning from the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan the back-rower has been involved in every Glasgow matchday 23, making 14 appearances to date this season.

Wilson’s passion and work in driving the club’s culture off the field was highlighted in the announcement of the award, as well as his willingness to lead by example on the pitch.

Mackenzie Construction Most Improved Player of the Season

Tom Gordon took home this year’s Most Improved Player of the Season award, after making his presence felt across the 2019/20 campaign to date.

The openside flanker has turned in a string of impressive performances in both the Guinness PRO14 and Heineken Champions Cup this season, catching the eye of pundits across Europe with his all-action and combative playing style.

Gordon – who scored his first try for Glasgow Warriors in February’s win over Zebre at Scotstoun – was also rewarded with a first call-up to the senior Scotland setup ahead of the 2020 Guinness Six Nations, further underlining both his improvement and potential.

Harper Macleod Test Player of the Season

In his debut campaign as an international player, Scott Cummings was rewarded for a series of impressive performances for Scotland with the 2019/20 Harper Macleod Test Player of the Season award.

Since making his Scotland debut in the 2019 summer Test away to France, the former Scotland U20 captain has been involved in every matchday 23 for his country.

The second-rower played a part in each of Scotland’s four matches at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, before becoming an integral member of his national squad in this season’s Guinness Six Nations

Denholm Oilfield Services Players’ Player of the Season

As voted for by his team-mates, Zander Fagerson was the recipient of the 2019/20 Denholm Oilfield Services Players’ Player of the Season award after a landmark campaig for the tight-head prop.

The 24-year-old has provided a dynamic ball-carrying option in addition to anchoring the Glasgow scrum across the Guinness PRO14 and Heineken Champions Cup, turning in a series of impressive performances to catch the eye of players, pundits and fans alike over the season so far.

His durability has also been an impressive asset over the course of the season, earning the man-of-the-match award against Edinburgh at Scotstoun and playing the full 80 minutes against Exeter in January.

SP Energy Networks Community Club of the Season

After a stellar year on and off the pitch, Biggar RFC were rewarded with the prize for SP Energy Networks Community Club of the Season for 2019/20.

The South Lanarkshire side finished 19 points clear at the top of National League One, an unassailable lead regardless of a shortened season.

With a thriving youth and women’s section to boot, the future is bright for the Hartreehill side.

Try of the Season, sponsored by University of Strathclyde

It was a closely contested award, but George Horne’s first try against Zebre at Scotstoun back in February was eventually selected as the 2019/20 Try of the Season by the Glasgow Warriors coaching team.

The livewire scrum-half finished off a flowing team-move to touch down for the first of two scores on the night, as the Warriors recorded a half-century against their Italian visitors.

2019/20 Leavers

As well as recognising the standout performers from across the season to date, Glasgow Warriors also paid tribute to those leaving the club at the end of the current campaign.

The group includes centurions Ruaridh Jackson, Jonny Gray and Tim Swinson, club record try-scorer DTH van der Merwe and co-captain Callum Gibbins, as well as Gordy Reid, Siua Halanukonuka, Nick Frisby, Rory Hughes and Matt Smith.

Coaching duo Dave Rennie and Jason O’Halloran were also recognised amongst the class of 2019/20 leavers, with the full video available below.
