Fergusson and Kelly named in Team GB 7s training squad

Glasgow Warriors centres Robbie Fergusson and Paddy Kelly have both been selected as part of the initial training squad for the Great Britain 7s squad, as preparations continue for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The pair are
part of a 22-man group named by Head Coach Tony Roques, with six Scotland 7s
stars vying for selection.

First named
in a Scotland 7s core squad ahead of the 2017/18 season, Fergusson has thrived
in the abbreviated format to become a key member of the Scotland setup.

He was named
as his country’s captain ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, and has represented the
men in blue at both the 2018 7s World Cup in San Francisco and the 2018
Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast.

The former
Ayr centre has also impressed in a Glasgow Warriors shirt in 2020/21, making
six starts for Danny Wilson’s men this season.

Inverness-born
Kelly made his Scotland 7s debut at the New Zealand leg of the 2019/20 World Sevens
Series, representing his country with distinction under Head Coach Ciaran
Beattie.

A product of
the FOSROC Scottish Rugby Academy, he was a recipient of the prestigious MacPhail
Scholarship in 2016 and has previously represented Highland RFC and French side
Le Parc.

Kelly made
his Glasgow Warriors debut against the Ospreys in November 2016, after
representing the club with a try-scoring display against Canada A at Bridgehaugh
earlier that year.

Speaking to
scottishrugby.org following the announcement, Fergusson expressed his pride at
being named in the wider training squad.

“I watched
the 2016 Olympic Games and became a Scotland 7s player the year after, so the
opportunity to get selected for Tokyo is something I’ve targeted over the past
few years,” said thr Scotland captain.

“The boys
will all be trying to put their best foot forward over the coming months to
ensure they are part of the final squad.”
