Lions in South Africa and Pumas in Argentina - check out what's been happening around the world in the latest Weekend Update

Lions take down the Lions

It was a successful first South African outing for the 2021 British and Irish Lions on Saturday night, as Warren Gatland’s men emerged with a comfortable victory over their namesakes from Johannesburg.

Ali Price impressed on his first start in the famous red jersey, providing razor-sharp service from the breakdown and crossing for his first try of the tour after a slick lineout move.

There was also reason to be cheerful for Zander Fagerson, as the tight-head came off the bench for the final 25 minutes to become the 848th player to represent the Lions in the touring side’s history.

Zander goes again

Tight-head Fagerson won’t have too long to wait until his second appearance for the Lions, either – the 25-year-old has been named to make his first start for the touring side in Wednesday’s clash with the Sharks.

It’ll be the first time that a Glasgow front-rower has started a match for the Lions in eight years, with Ryan Grant the last to do so on the 2013 tour to Australia.

Argentina open account

It wasn’t just in the red of the Lions that Warriors were in action over the weekend, though – Enrique Pieretto and incoming signing Domingo Miotti both had parts to play in Argentina’s 24-17 victory over Romania on Saturday night.

Tight-head Pieretto – making his first international start since 2017 – was part of a pack that earned a penalty try, whilst fly-half Miotti came off the bench to convert the match-winning score with 10 minutes to play.

Once a Warrior…

Two former Warriors will also be jet-setting this summer, after their selection for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Folau Niua – a former Melrose 7s winner in Glasgow colours alongside countryman Carlin Isles – and Connor Braid will be representing USA and Canada respectively this summer, joining Robbie Fergusson in going for gold in Japan.
