SP Energy Networks Warriors Championship set to kick-off

The 2019 SP Energy Networks Warriors Championship gets underway tomorrow at Scotstoun Stadium.

Five schools will be competing in the first round of qualifying which kicks-off at 10.30am.

It follows last Friday’s launch of the 2019 SP Energy Networks Warriors Championship at Whitelee Windfarm on the outskirts of Glasgow where pupils and staff from participating schools were shown around the UK’s largest onshore windfarm.

This year’s tournament once again sees 25 schools from across west, central and southern Scotland compete during 11 weeks of action with two schools battling it out in the final prior to the Guinness PRO14 match between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby on Saturday 27 April.

Each school will have S1 and S2 boys’ teams competing as well as an under-15 girls’ team.

The schools competing in Q1 tomorrow are Annan Academy, Stonelaw High School, Loudoun Academy, Smithyscroft Secondary School and Eastwood High School.

It’s Stonelaw High School’s maiden appearance in the Warriors Championship which was established four years ago and has helped raise awareness of rugby union at grassroots level whilst promoting active and healthy lifestyles to young people.

Stonelaw High School pupil Euan Beattie, pictured, will be competing in the S2 Boys’ team and he can’t wait for the action to get underway.

Speaking to glasgowwarriors.org at last week’s launch, he said: “I am really looking forward to it.

“I know I have a good strong team behind me so hopefully we can do well.

“We have some big boys and a lot of us spend time together off the pitch which is important.

“As a group we go for lunch together and sit with each other during school breaks. So we get on well and have a good team spirit.

“I know we’ve got some good players in the girls’ team as well and it would be great to win qualifying.”

The 13-year-old added: “Playing at Scotstoun is an exciting opportunity.

“I have been to Scotstoun a few times, most recently to watch Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh Rugby which I really enjoyed.

“I love rugby and have been playing since last year.

“My grandpa played rugby and he told me I would be a good build for the sport.

“So I went along to training and started from there.”

We’ll have coverage of the 2019 SP Energy Networks Warriors Championship across our club channels from tomorrow.
