“Bright young talent” Dobie staying at Scotstoun

One of Scotland’s brightest prospects will be staying at Scotstoun for the next few seasons, after Jamie Dobie agreed to extend his contract with Glasgow Warriors.

The
Inverness native has impressed team-mates, pundits and the Warrior Nation alike
with his performances over the first two years of his professional career,
making 15 appearances to date in a Glasgow jersey.

His meteoric
rise in the professional ranks continued with a first call-up to the senior
Scotland squad earlier this week, as the scrum-half was one of three players
invited to train with Gregor Townsend’s playing group prior to the 2021
Guinness Six Nations.

Having made
his debut away to the Cheetahs in the opening match of the 2019/20 campaign,
Dobie quickly caught the eye with his speed of service and game intelligence.

The former
Scotland U18 captain produced a Player of the Match-winning performance on his
first start for the Warriors, receiving a standing ovation from the Scotstoun
faithful upon his departure from the pitch against the Dragons in February
2020.

He has been
an integral part of the Warriors squad in his second campaign as a
professional, having been involved in every Glasgow matchday 23 since
November’s away victory against Cardiff Blues.

A keen
tennis player before turning to rugby, the scrum-half was recently named as one
of the 2020/21 class of Performance Scholars at the University of Strathclyde.

Dobie was
the first player born in the 21^st century to represent the Warriors,
a club of which he was the sole member until being joined by Rufus McLean and
Ollie Smith on Saturday evening.

On the
announcement of his extension, Dobie told glasgowwarriors.org: “I’ve really
enjoyed my time at the club, being part of the squad and being in the
environment with the boys.

“I’ve spent
a lot of time learning and it’s been great to have the two top scrum-halves in
the country to learn from.

“Despite the
results not going our way, we’re moving in the right direction as a squad and
as club, and I’m looking forward to being part of that for the next few years.

“I’m excited
to continue to progress my game here, keep improving and continue to run out in
the Warriors jersey.”

Glasgow
Warriors Head Coach Danny Wilson was understandably thrilled to secure the
services of one of Scottish rugby’s brightest prospects for the long-term,
saying: “Jamie is great young scrum-half.

“We’ve seen
him step up in these last two seasons and show what he can do.

“We’re
focused on bringing through and developing young talent. Being able to retain
Jamie and continue his development at the club, learning from the likes of Ali
[Price], George [Horne] and Sean [Kennedy] is fantastic.

“He’s shown a real maturity in how he directs players around the park, is a threat
with ball in hand and his kicking game
is developing well.

“We’re
looking forward to seeing him continue to kick on and grow in a Warriors
jersey.”
