Miller embracing Glasgow style

“I’m still trying to connect where everything is in the city, to be honest!”

With his water bottle in one hand, Ally Miller laughs when he’s asked how he’s settling into life in Glasgow. Yet it seems like his navigational troubles are the only crease in an otherwise seamless shift to Scotstoun to date, with the back-rower all smiles as he discusses his move west.

“I went out for a coffee with a couple of the boys the other day in and around Byres Road, but I’m still trying to get my locations sorted out just now!” grinned Miller.

“Glasgow’s a really nice city though, and I’m excited to get out and explore a bit more. Everyone at the club has been great to me, it’s been a massive help in terms of settling in.

“It’s going really well. I had a really good break, and it’s been good to come in and get started in the first block of pre-season. It’s been good to get to know a few of the boys, as well as catch up with a few lads I’ve played with before along the road!”

Indeed, despite being just 25, Miller has already packed a fair amount into his career to date. An accomplished performer in 7s who has represented Scotland on both the World 7s Series and at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the back-rower’s displays also earned him the prestigious Tommy Macpherson Quaich during a sting at London Scottish in the 2016/17 season.

Now, having made the switch to Scotstoun from Edinburgh ahead of the new campaign, he’s throwing himself into life with the Warriors – even if the travel doesn’t quite match up to life on the 7s circuit.

“You get a few trips down to Cardiff but it’s not quite the same as Sydney!” quipped Miller, laughing.

“I’ll live, though!

“It’s great to see the guys again – I played with a few guys for Scotland through the age-grades, too, as well as a few guys through the 7s setup.

“It’s been great to catch up with Duncy [Duncan Weir], too – we played together at Edinburgh and I know how excited he is to pull on the Glasgow shirt again.”

There’s one thing on Miller’s wish list that will doubtless be echoed across Glasgow supporters wherever they may be, however. Having never played in front of a sold-out Scotstoun – or indeed a Scotstoun with any fans whatsoever – he’s looking forward to introducing himself to the Warrior Nation when he steps out onto the pitch for the new campaign.

“I’ve heard really good things from the boys about the crowd here,” said Miller.

“Seeing all the games on TV with the Warrior Nation in full voice makes you want to make a good impression and hopefully it’s not too long before we get the chance to play in front of them.”

“It’s a great pitch here – it really suits fast rugby and that in turn suits the way I enjoy playing.

“I love having the ball in my hands and attacking. I’m keen to work on my defence though with the coaches here and really bring those aspects further into my game.

“Hopefully I’ll get plenty of opportunity to run with the ball this season, and really enjoy the Glasgow style of play.”
