Steyn extends stay at Scotstoun

Kyle Steyn has become the latest player to commit his future to Glasgow Warriors ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, after the Scotland international agreed a multi-year extension to his stay at Scotstoun.

The
27-year-old has become an integral part of the Glasgow setup since his arrival
at the club back in February 2019, turning in high-quality performance after
high-quality performance for Danny Wilson’s men.

Equally adept in the centres as he is on the wing, Steyn made his club debut in a 38-34 win away to Cardiff just five days after signing a full-time contract with the Warriors.

Indeed, he was a crucial part of the side that reached the 2019 Guinness PRO14 Final at Celtic Park, crossing for a memorable try in the 50-20 semi-final victory in front of a full house at Scotstoun.

His versatility and work ethic then saw him appear in each of Glasgow’s Heineken Champions Cup fixtures in 2019/20, finishing off a scintillating score in the 27-24 victory away to La Rochelle.

Having endured almost 18 months out of action due to a combination of a long-term injury and the COVID-19 enforced suspension of rugby, Steyn returned to action in style in 2021; tries in successive matches against Edinburgh, the Dragons and Leinster in the Rainbow Cup saw the winger help his side to finish the season on a four-match unbeaten run.

His efforts on and off the field saw him named as the recipient of the 2020/21 The Famous Grouse Coaches Award, in recognition of his drive to return to rugby and the form in which he returned to Glasgow colours.

Steyn has been an ever-present for the Warriors so far in 2021/22, appearing in all 11 of the club’s fixtures to date and crossing for tries against the Dragons and La Rochelle.

On the international stage, too, the flyer has made his mark; after making his international debut against France in March 2020, Steyn marked his return to BT Murrayfield by scoring four tries in Scotland’s 60-14 win over Tonga last November.

The feat made Steyn the first Scotland men’s player ever to cross for four tries at the home of Scottish rugby, and the first since Gavin Hastings achieved the feat in the 1995 Rugby World Cup win over the Ivory Coast.

Off the field, Steyn has been heavily involved in the club’s support of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, including in November’s Plaster It Purple match against Leinster at Scotstoun.

His form this season saw him named in Gregor Townsend’s 39-man squad for the Guinness Six Nations yesterday, one of 11 Warriors included ahead of next month’s Calcutta Cup clash at BT Murrayfield.

“I’ve loved my time in Glasgow so far,” Steyn told glasgowwarriors.org after re-signing.

“I’m loving my rugby right now, and I love the community feel to both this club and to Glasgow as a city. My fiancée and I are both really settled here and it was a pretty easy decision to stay.

“I still feel like there’s a lot more to come from me, especially in attack. It’s been great to get back to a steady run of games and being involved with the boys, and to play in some pretty big games as well. I’m certainly not taking any of it for granted, though, and I always feel privileged to be selected for this club.

“We’ve got a big opportunity to develop as a group of players – this is a really talented group who I think can do some great things, and that all starts with a massive game against La Rochelle this weekend.”
