Nominees for McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month for April revealed

Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Franco Smith has shortlisted a quartet of the club’s standout performers for April’s McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month award, after his side moved to the top of the BKT United Rugby Championship with three rounds of the regular season remaining.

After beginning the month with a narrow defeat away to Harlequins that saw the club’s Investec Champions Cup journey come to a close for 2023/24, the Warriors bounced back in memorable fashion with a 21-10 victory over the Hollywoodbets Sharks on Plaster It Purple night at Scotstoun.

Smith’s squad then ran in six tries in a 40-9 win away to Zebre Parma last weekend, the bonus-point victory sending the Warriors to the top of the standings after 15 rounds of competition.

Supporters can vote for their winner until 5pm on Friday 3 May over on the club’s official Twitter channel.

The nominees are:

Kyle Steyn

Club captain Steyn has continued to lead from the front in trademark style, as the winger featured prominently in all three of the club’s fixtures across April.

The Scotland flyer’s line break saw him set up George Horne for a scintillating score at the Twickenham Stoop, before crashing over under the posts in front of the East Stand on Plaster It Purple night at Scotstoun.

He then crossed for a brace away in Parma last weekend, racing in for his first from halfway before finishing off a flowing team move to secure the four-try bonus-point.

Zander Fagerson

Tight-head Fagerson was to the fore once more in April, providing a physical edge in the Glasgow front-row.

The prop started in the meetings with both Harlequins and the Hollywoodbets Sharks, before coming off the bench to impressive effect in the win over Zebre Parma last time out.

His tally of 91 carries sees him sit inside the top 50 across the entire BKT URC, whilst a tackle percentage of 98% has regularly seen Fagerson sit amongst the squad’s top defenders.

Tom Jordan

Jordan’s versatility was on full display across the month of April, the former Ayrshire Bull showcasing his skills both in the number 10 jersey and across the back-line.

After starting at fly-half against both Harlequins and the Sharks, the New Zealand-born back came off the bench to feature at centre against Zebre Parma, helping to create the club’s final two tries for Jamie Dobie and George Horne.

No Warrior has made more clean breaks than Jordan’s tally of 14 in the league this season, whilst only Stafford McDowall and Josh McKay have beaten more defenders for Glasgow in 2023/24 so far.

Thomas Gordon

Openside flanker Gordon brought his trademark dynamism in both attack and defence over the last fortnight, featuring in both of the club’s BKT URC fixtures.

The man from Rotorua came off the bench to help his team to victory over the Sharks at Scotstoun, before starting in Saturday afternoon’s win over Zebre Parma at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi.

Gordon’s defensive shift in the latter fixture saw him make 17 tackles in the Italian sun, his efforts earning him the KubeNet Defender of the Week award.
